Prefer being up all night even when not working?

Published

I'm a natural night owl and worked nights for many years and LOVED it. I felt bad for my coworkers who did NOT like nights,

and only worked them because they HAD to.

I'm not working currently; but I still love to be up at night! I have more energy, it's not as hot, ( HATE summer time! The heat, the

bugs!) I alter my sleep

habits in order to volunteer, socialize, run errands, etc....but if I COULD, I'd love to do all those things in the middle of

the night, too.

How about you?

I envy all of you, I hate night shift, and finding a pediatric job would be so much easier if I could easily function on the night shift. I did nights a long time ago in the ER and I just cannot function the next day or for a few days after I am just tired all the time.

I am more of en evening 3-11 owl, since i HATE waking up early in the morning and do much better when I do not wake up to an alarm clock, that is the ideal shift for me.

I don't envy any of your neighbors though if you live in an apartment or condo!!!

I do mourn the loss of the 3-11 shift. While I'm no longer bedside, it sucks that 99% of acute care is 12-hour shifts now. Drives older nurses away. And with them goes their experience.

I loved nights until it hit 3 am!!!! When I was working per diem in the ER I would piece together PRN shifts, and 3pm - 3 am was the best ever schedule for me.

I saw a TV police show several years ago. A vice squad officer and his partner we're driving through a neighborhood. The vice officer said, "You can always tell where the meth addicts live, their garage doors are open and they're working on their cars at 3 in the morning."

I would have LOVED this shift if it had been offered where I worked !!!! :)

I loved night shift and was FINE until 7am for many years.

But it got to the point where around

4 am, I felt HORRRRIBLE---I used to call it "a SICK kind of tired."

"a SICK kind of tired."

Gee, that is generally how I feel all the time, night shift or not. And I'm not exaggerating.

What I do like about nights work wise is less family, ancillary staff, and managers around playing politics.

Life wise, it is lovely to go work out at 0300 and be able to get my workout done efficiently without a bunch of people in the way. No traffic, Not an excess of human beings crowding everything everywhere.

Day sleeping is a challenge because it requires quiet and darkness. The leaf blower man didn't get the memo. People think it's cool to call you at 1300.

I hate waking up early in the morning! I really wish there was a 12hr schedule that started somewhere between 1000 to maybe 1400 besides the ED....because we do need at least SOME sunlight...and it is at least possible to interact with the rest of the world when need be

I know 12 hours is 12 hours but it's so much easier for me to stay awake and alert at night! I'm staying up right now! Granted my schedule is insane at the moment and requires me to flip back and forth, but it's nice being up late. When I have errands to do, I just go at the end of my day and people think I've woken up early like a responsible adult. ;D

I'm reading and responding to this at 00:54. Totally normal for me. I also recently started the first of my three loads of laundry, will be washing / drying / folding on and off all evening. Totally normal for me.
