Do you like when you have a long list of short cases or one or two long cases?

As a Surg-Tech I liked short surgeries because it made my day go by much faster. Now as an RN I don't know I'm stil waiting to find this out.

I'd prefer a mix. A little variety makes the day go faster! I also prefer different specialties, and with the shift I work, I could do anything but open heart all in 8 hours.

I tend to enjoy cases where I have enough time to sit and chart without racing with the surgeon. I work with the same surgeon every Tuesday and Thursday and it's all general cases. His cases are always at least over 20 minutes and I really enjoy those days.

I'd prefer longer cases as opposed to short cases. I would rather work in Neurosurgery doing a Total Disc Arthroplasty, which can take up to 6 hours or sometimes work in Plastics where you can do an Abdomninoplasty, which can take up to 8 hours and we all know suturing alone can take up to 3 hours. I prefer neuro cases since those cases tend to take up an 8 hour day. I used to be the ENT Service Nurse and I remember having 8 cases for one room, even though we would be finished before lunch time, I would be exhausted, and it was worse if you had a nurse anesthetist who was dragging their feet between turnovers. Ortho cases are nice too since you tend to get them done in and out. The service I dislike the most is general surgery. Those surgeons tend to have the most attitude. Orthopedics and nerosurgeons tend to be laid back. GYN surgeons sometimes tend to be clueless, from what I have seen in the Air Force, when doing Lap Assisted lady partsl Hysterectomies.
Our OR has computers in every room so when I am not charting, I can relax and surf the net while the surgery is on auto-pilot...but I always make sure I am facing the field and I listen attentively. Now when I moonlighted in the OR for civilian hospitals, those surgeons are three times faster than our military surgeons. Sometimes the case would be finishing and I barely had enough time to start my charting and do all the charges and do my counts....but at least time did go by fast.
Hope this helps.

Wow. I'd find myself in the unemployment line pretty quickly if I tried that where I work.

Depends on why the case is long. If the surgeon drags his rear/doesn't know what they're doing (we're blessed to have one of those), then i'm wishing for a day of fast cases.
