Her response broke my heart and it made me feel like I’m a terrible nurse. It even made me consider transferring to a different floor. The nicu  has always been my dream job and I’ve worked really hard to get a job on this unit.

This woman is obviously a terrible person, and terrible instructor. She is probably jealous of you and don't want to share her knowledge, which is exactly what she should be doing. She has no life and her only pleasure is the control she exert over you.

This is disgusting, she does not deserve you and you don't deserve this despicable preceptor. Please leave as soon as possible, and please report her to her to the DON.

I know exactly what your situation is because I had a similar situation in nursing school happening to me. When I look back, I realize that the biggest mistake I made in my nursing career was to have accommodated that horrible preceptorship. Please leave this preceptorship because this woman will cause permanent damage to your career as a nurse.

Even if you lose one whole year finding a better preceptorship, it will pale by comparison to the damage this woman will inflict on you and your self confidence.

This says a lot! Well Experienced Registered Nurses Don't Fool Around!

They are basically telling you that LIVES ARE AT STAKE HERE! So if NURSING IS not for you, then drop it... or re-consider and reflect on how to and become and a better and safe STUDENT... then Pass your Boards and then look back! and Thank That Preceptor!

Oh Lord...give me a break, this is the kind of attitude that makes me sick among some nurses. They are never willing to train and to work with new people even thought that's the job they've been assigned. They act superior without any need whatsoever. Nurses eat their young. What antiquated, unproductive cop out and corporation *** kisser attitude is that? The only right thing you got here is your name.

OP, I would love to see you succeed in this role just because that preceptor made that horrible, inexcusable, unforgivable comment. But that is not a bell you can unring. She will always be Wuzzie's Heather to you now. I don't think they deserve more of your time or efforts. Every post I have seen from you demonstrates your quality and self-reflection; take it where you will be appreciated.

"Wuzzie's Heather", that has a nice ring to it, deserves a thread of its own!

The OP is not a new grad or student, just new to NICU.

I started out as a new grad NICU nurse. I had a great preceptor. But quickly discovered that this is not the place for me. I found that, on the whole, NICU nurses don't really want to be nurses. They will freely admit that they cringe at the thought of "big people" blood or (God forbid) POOP. But they do loooooove reigning over their little helpless patients (and preceptees) and the almost invariably clueless and terrified parents. Sure, there are a few good eggs (mostly from older generations), but the majority are cliquey and in it for the money. Next shift look around, how many are preening their hair extensions and making appointments to get their tarantula eyelashes stuck on? Just saying.

Look, I have a lot of thoughts about NICU nurses (both as a parent of a NICU baby, as well as a nurse manager who has overseen NICU nurses) but this post was just gross.

Maybe but that still doesn’t make how she’s being treated right. I know that’s not what you’re saying but in my opinion this preceptor does not get a pass. I’m pretty sure they are going to continue torturing the OP just for funsies.

No, but it might have given her more confidence to interact with the virago.
