What is a "good" grade for you?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I am a little bummed because I didn't do as well as I hoped in chemistry. It seems like everyone else was just flying by with A's and I worked my butt off to get a C+. Should I retake it? The nursing program wants C's or better (so I technically pass) but I'm just worried because I want to be a great nurse and what if a chemistry question comes up and a patient suffers because of my lack of knowledge? I do pretty well in school but tackling all these sciences (chem, bio, anatomy, etc.) is making me second guess myself and my capabilities. :crying2: Do you guys have any advice? Should I retake it? I still have many pre-req's to go and this was my first semester back after a year out of school. (I'm a sophmore) I'm just a little stressed...

Dont be to hard on yourself, chemistry is a hard class. I just took it this semester and I got a B....I am thrilled. It is up to you if you want to retake it, maybe talk to a school advisor and see what they think. Out of 55 people in my class only 5 got A's so not everyone fly's by with an A.

Good luck,

Don't feel bummed. I always set high standards to myself and always shoot for an A. Unfortunately, Chemistry was the exception to that rule. I worked so hard and earned a B+. While it is a good grade, it equalled an A+ in my eyes. Chemistry is tough, so you are not alone. Good luck to you ;)

I agree with the other posters, Chemistry is HARD. Balance your life and don't take too many classes at once. All the science classes required to get into nursing are hard and time consuming and it is very difficult to make B's and A's. Depending on some teachers you are lucky to get a C. In our school these science classes are weed-out classes with only very few survivors in the end to take the final. I have experienced professional people that already worked in the medical field or had science degrees getting crushed by ruthless professors. Keep your head up and keep driving forward. ;)

What is a good grade?? For me I don't consider the letter as a good grade. If you understand the material well and I don't do well in the class I don't stress. Chemistry is also a very hard class. The first class I have gotten a B in in college. If there is a specific GPA and it is high and chem depends on it I would re-take it but if this C+ wont jeperdize you chances of getting in don't retake it. If you did your best that is all you can do.

PS. remember c's are average not horrible getting one of those!

If you are not worried about it effecting your ability to be accepted into the program, I wouldn't sweat it. If you are worried about your GPA because of scholarships, grants, etc. then you may want to retake it. Otherwise, I think I would just review the things you found difficult and put it behind you. No sense in stressing out over a passing grade. The best advice I've ever heard is, "Don't sweat the small stuff, and it's all small stuff."

Good luck to you.

If it's enough to get into the nursing school of your choosing, then it's good enough.

Keely, Keely, Keely,

There are NO perfect nurses out there, Striving to get good grades is swell, but striving for perfection is insane and unhealthy.

I go to school with girls who cry over not getting an A but do pass. Then I see people who fail and hold their head up high and continue even being a year behind.

I got an A in chemistry, so what does that make me? Yeh, that's Good but getting good grades does not mean you will be a good nurse. Many "A" students have no social skills, that is needed to handle the stress, difficulties and hard work it takes in nursing. Many "Book" people just can't hack the real pace of nursing and thinking on your feet. Many have done well in school but have failed the NCLEX. There will not be patients who ask you if you ACED Chemistry, they want to feel taken care of and that you have some sense about you - that's all.

Please do not feel you have to take the course over again, if in the future you can't recall something - you look it up like 99.9999% of nurses do.

As a much older student who is in my last semester after tomm., I know from experience that upon finishing school you will not know everything. You cannot possibly know everything and that is why there are reference book and other people who know some things but not all things as someone you can ask intelligent questions to.

Read an article that says that on an average students who made "C's" in college were 90% more likely to contribute to their alma mater and their salaries were significantly higher than their college counterparts that made "A's"

Just remember you are just as qualified to be a nurse as someone who makes a 3.89 gpa. You learn the same things. When you enter into nursing school, you will be glad just to pass.............................it has its challenges. I have a 3.5gpa and I passed Peds this semester by ONE point. I know I will be a good nurse, I don't need a grade to validate that.

Base your confidence on something else besides a grade. It will take you alot further.................Good Luck- Heather BSN May 06

When I get stressed out, I try to remember "C's equal degrees"!

I try to get A's because I want to go to graduate school but realistically you need a 3.0 to get in and that is a B so there is room for some B's and even some C's in your gpa. I have a 3.4 on a 4 pt scale and I'm satisfied. I try not to stress about grades because there is so much other stressful things in nursing school.

I'd take the C and be happy to have gotten through it.

Good Luck

For me it depends on what class it is. If it is Biology, English, psych, sociology, etc, nothing less than an "A" will satisfy me. I don't think I have gotten an "A" in math since high school. I am okay getting "B"s and an occasional "C" when we are talking statistics...:chuckle Suprisingly I got an "A" in chemistry, but not with out a lot of work and a VERY smart friend that as able to explain things to me that made sense.

Wow thanks guys for all your responses.:icon_hug: My gpa is going to be fine with the C so I don't think I'll retake it. I just want to make sure that I am at the same level with the other nursing students when I get there...Thanks. :)
