I had a moment at clinical that made me pretty proud! So yes I'm going to brag a bit here.
Yesterday at clinical I had the chance to work with the same patient I did on the previous clinical day. She needed to have her Antegrade Colonic Enema done. The staff nurse pulled me aside and asked if I would be comfortable with teaching her how to do this because she's never seen it done. That's right people the nurse asked me a mere student to show her how to do a procedure! I was floored and impressed by her. The staff on this floor is amazing and they have helped us to grow and learn it was great to be able to do that in return for one of them. I'm not sure that peds is the place for me but I would jump at a chance to work with such a wonderful group of nurse. I hope that we can all realize that there are wonderful floors and not every place "eats their young"!
Just goes to show you that we will continue to learn far beyond our days as a student. If anyone else wants to share a positive experience here is your chance.

That's great you're having a positive experience. I wish we had more posts that are encouraging. Not all clinical environments are awful or dreadful. I'm having a great time in clinicals, because I'm finally getting to apply what I'm learning. And finally, the paperwork (NANDA) makes much more sense now than in the classroom, because I can see with my own eyes how to relate it to real-world situations.
So many of my classmates dread the paperwork. I find it fairly simple now that it "clicks". :) I look forward to clinicals each week now. Can't wait for next semester to delve in further!
I had a bad clinical site in the past so I understand both sides. Just want people to see and acknowledge the positives too.

I've been saying it all week. This forum lately seems to have more whining, complaining, and blame shifting than I've seen in a while. It's very disheartening. I have loved my clinicals. I've learned a lot, had great people in my group, and have had great clinical instructors. I had a nurse who graduated from the program I am in just a year earlier. She would come and find some of us to do things, even if they weren't our assigned patient. Our clinical instructor was ok with it so we were able to do many different skills. Her name is Stephanie and she really made my clinical experience great!

That's cool! Last Monday I taught a new nurse (that was getting trained) how to give meds through a peg tube. She thanked me. (I'm an LPN student and she's an RN) my instructor made me stand in front of my whole class and tell about it. :)
Sometimes you feel like you don't know much in school, but I actually started blurting out the steps to her. I talked her through the whole thing. She was nervous I think. But she appreciated the help. The nurse that was training her I think got frustrated because she didn't know a lot. So she left her alone with me and my instructor. Yea it feels good to teach.
I hear ya aubgurl. Lot's of negatives lately. I'm a hands on kind of gal and I've loved my clinicals even the one site that was less than stellar. There are so many great things that happen everyday and we need to focus on them. Thanks for sharing your story.
We had a new grad from our program also and she stayed late after her shift (on her own time) to show us what she does when she starts her shift to organize her "plan of attack" for the day. We learned so much from her in just 30 minutes. She said that she did it for us because we have been working hard and she seen us looking for new info. WOOHOO kudo's for nurses that want to share their experiences and knowledge with us.
The positive experiences are out there. If students aren't seeing them they just need to look and be proactive in seeking out these chances.

That's awesome pookyp! Way to go! We all have something to give regardless of where we are in the program. We are a team and helping each other only increases our bond!

I am sorry about your experience. Next week you need to go to those nurses and say that it was totally unacceptable that you had a good experience. You are suppose to have bad experiences and hate nursing school. Great!! now you are going to graduate and become an RN and treat students the same way and they will have good experiences. We can't be having all these happy nurses.
Right Don1984? This just isnt acceptable!
