Thanks for the replies. I'm a bit shocked, so I'm SO glad to have read all this! Now a question...per diem? is that basically an hourly employee with no guarantee of hours a week/month? Why is that rate so much higher?

Specializes in Pediatrics, Emergency, Trauma.

The pay rate of a per diem employee is to compensate the individual for not having any benefits...it's a form of "incentive pay".

Specializes in Med/surg, Onc.

Most places don't guarantee any hours for per diem employees. We are to ways getting calls for people to work extra due to sick calls etc, so even people with guaranteed hours can pick up and make extra for necessary shifts.

Specializes in critical care.
Pensions are so very rare. You likely won't find one unless you work for the government/education. Most employers offer 401k, but some don't even contribute to them for you. The hospital I worked for didn't. I work as a school nurse now and I have a pension, I'm covered under the teachers union and get their benefits. I do pay $300/ month for my family health insurance and it is good insurance.

Not even government jobs are giving pensions. My husband is full time in a government job. He has the non profit version of a 401k with matching up to 8% I think.

Hi all, thought I'd contribute to this too.. Specifically I live in Riverside County, CA

1) Southern California

2) 32.00/hr. Not sure what the night differentials are since I am a new hire, but I will update soon.

3) New Grad

4) Currently hired at a SNF with a 2 year contract in place.

Specializes in public health.

Is it just your facility or do most SNF requires you to sign a contract when you get hired?

Not all are signed onto a contract. I don't think many SNFS do, but because the high turnover rates I think my facility is implementing it to new grads.
