**POLL** New 1st Year RN Salary

Nurses New Nurse

Published

Hello all, I am curious to see what the current pay rate is across the country so we can better prepare ourselves and negotiate better salaries! Please try to keep this poll to any graduates after 2010. Thanks!

1) State

2) Hourly Salary

3) Experience, if any

4) Specialty, if any

Here's mine:

NJ

$26/hr new grad, no exp., recently changed jobs $33/hr 1 yr exp.

Only 1 year old RN :saint:

Nephrology/dialysis

Virginia- (This is only in regards to southwest VA) RN Pay- new grad: $19.46/hour (Carilion clinic) and between 20-22.00 for new grad (HCA health systems). If you have experience Carilion will try to pay you $20.46/hr but you can negotiate them to about $22.00 and for HCA they will pay anywhere from $22-25.00/hr for experienced nurses depending on which floor your work. usually a $3 shift diff for weekends and holidays! Now in Richmond, VA the pay is A lot BETTER!

Is the cost of living THAT much lower in places where the pay is like $19/hr?

I am in CA, I would not be happy with less than $25/hr but rent is high here.

I live in southwest VA and they start new grads no experience out at 19.46-22.00/hr and honestly the average cost of a home in our area is between $250,000.00 and $300,000.00. We have many many houses that cost a lot more than that but that is probably the cheapest that you will find a house in my area. There are also a few houses that cost less but they are not recommended because they are really crappy lol I live near a lake so the houses in our area range from $350,000.00- around 1,000,000.00.

1. CT

2. $27.50/hr w/ shift differentials

3. New grad

4. Internal medicine

NJ

First job

Medical Surgical

$42/hour (nights/BSN differential)

Holy moly, I think we're gonna stay here for a while. I had no idea how much difference there is in salaries from state to state.

There is more to the job than just pay. Ratio, support staff, Cost of living, etc.

The cost of living is not that different among states.

That is radically untrue. Mercy.

You be surprise. Compare the cost of living in California to Mississippi. Big difference therefore big difference in salary

How much is gallon of milk, gasoline, a lb of apples, grapes? The only diff is housing

Just to put it into perspective...I live 5 minutes outside of Philadelphia in NJ....and gas is about 75 cents more a gallon across the bridge than it is here. If you think other things like food/energy/taxes don't vary considerably from area to area.... well you need to get out more often.

Well now that I live in a state that pays more than 21 per hr , "I can get out more often " and visit other states :)

Gal. Milk: 4.98 for whole. My state has state-sanctioned price fixing for dairy products.

Gal. Gas: 2.98 for reg. Over 3 in the rural areas.

1 lb of apples: 1.89 for Gala at Supertarget. Price of fresh produce skyrockets in the winter d/t our distance from any warm farmland.

Also need to factor in for my area: cost of heating the house (it's currently 3 degrees above now, low was -12 last night) and the cost of transportation; there is very little public transportation and a lot of open rural roads to cover to get just about anywhere.
