Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi, everyone....some of you may have noticed this topic in other threads on other forums/boards, but I see some of you are quite new and maybe would be seeing this for the first time.

AllNurses is a great place to exchange information, do some research, and vent frustrations. It's also not even close to being as anonymous as most new members seem to believe it to be. With the increased use of the internet for searching people's backgrounds, it doesn't take much effort at all to find out where someone works, lives, the hours they keep and where they shop, where their kids go to school....you get the idea.

Please don't make it easy for the psychos out there by posting your PHOTO, for heaven's sake!

Beyond that, even if you believe yourself shielded from those sorts of troubles (as if we could ever be sure of that?), you should DEFINITELY realize that students have been kicked out of their nursing programs for posting messages online that someone in their program (fellow student, teacher, clinical instructor, you name it) found objectionable.

You could lose that long-awaited program spot because of a message board post, YES. You could find yourself as a new grad, in a shiny new RN position, only to be dropped during your probationary time because of message board posting that vents about preceptors, employer's policies, scheduling, etc etc.

I'm NOT saying to never post these kinds of messages. WE ALL DO. I AM saying that putting your FACE, and oftentimes name, email address, town you live in, school you attend, just makes it blissfully easy to identify you and REMOVE you from your school or employment.

Word to the wise, that's all....guess that's my Public Service Announcement for Today :)

Who do you think you are?? Let people do what they want, we are adults here and not in kindergarten!!!

Was this supposed to be sarcastic? No one is forcing anyone to change their profile picture, just giving very helpful advice about the consequences of making yourself too public on here.

The 1st amendment protects the right to say what you wish (with reasonable restrictions, such as yelling fire in a crowded theater); however it does not guarantee freedom from consequences of what is said. Best read the student handbook for conduct rules.

The 1st amendment means the government will not come after you, arrest you, or kill you for what you say publicly. Your right to do so. All within reason. Such as, you can not yell "FIRE" in a theater. Not every country has this right.

The 1st amendment doesn't protect you from from the consequences of your statements. Hence, you can not yell "Fire" in a crowded theater, causeing mass panic that causes death.

The 1st amendment doesn't protect you from the school it protects you against the Government. Since some states governments own electric chairs, I see that as a good thing.

It isn't that there will be legal action taken against you, but if you are in nursing school, you are pretty well at their mercy as to whether or not you remain there as far as conduct goes. I reviewed our list (it's about a 40 page handout!) of guidelines and rules a couple days ago after an instructor suggested we all review to prevent any "misunderstandings". It has serious consequences for inappropriate social media usage, among many other "no-no's". Between my family and school, I don't really have time for any no-no's anyway. Darn it :sarcastic:

And this is an example of why people need to be careful of what private information they post

And it demonstrates a nasty attitude that I wouldn't want to spot in someone I recognized IRL: an orientee, say, or a student.

You need more Jell-O shots, it really brings out the new grad flavor.

Thanks for the advice. I had never thought about that! Google Image Search makes it even easier to reverse look up photos, so by the time I'm finally in the program who knows how easy it will be to use it. While I don't plan on posting anything that could get me in trouble, you never know how someone might interpret your participation in a discussion.

Very few people plan on posting things that will get them in trouble, usually just happens and takes them by surprise!

Yes, I know I'm dredging up an old thread. However it seems silly to start a new one when bumping this one should work just as nicely.

I have noticed an uptick in posters using what seem to be their real names and/or photos. Just know this can come back to bite you in the rear.

I noticed as well...glad to see it as a bump, or posters have been PM'ing posters, and they have been changing their avatars-still worth the bump.
