Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello all, I am rather depressed right now and looking for a little advice. I am a pre-nursing student and Certified Nursing Assistant. I am currently attending Georgia State in hope of applying to their accelerated program this fall. I recently spoke to an advisor for the program and reviewed acceptance stats/info and have concluded that I will never get in anywhere with my gpa!! I was registered for 15 credits this summer just to meet the requirements for the deadlines. I got all As in A&P and Microbiology, and my gpa was just above a 3.7. However, this Chemistry class I am taking right now might possibly bring it down to just below a 3.7, and I am already below the program's average gpa of 3.83 (the applicants have low TEAS scores and high GPAs). My institutional GPA is higher, but this program focuses on nursing pre-reqs. I am highly depressed, as I worked very hard for these grades while working full time and dealing with a million other things, and can't stand that 3 Bs (B PLUSES at that) may put me out of the running. I took some of my pre-reqs at a Technical college, and my GPA there was close to a 4.0. I was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa because of it.

I have experience in the medical field, am working on a second language (not mention I write awesome essays/papers that have always blown professors away), recommendation letters from professors and friends who work at other universities, and volunteer experience. Do I have a chance? What did you lovelies get in your pre-reqs to get accepted? I have been studying for the TEAS like a madwoman and plan to take it when I finish Chem. A friend just told me she was denied from Kennesaw state with a 3.75 GPA and 91 teas score. Another had a 3.65 and very high TEAS score. I see no hope, and these unrealistic standards keep increasing every year. What should I do? As all of the schools in my area are so hard to get into, and people with higher GPAs than me are getting rejected. Should I consider an RN to BSN route? I need to make money and cannot keep playing these games with nursing admissions for the rest of my youth. I transferred to GSU because the Technical college "LOST" my academic file (long, ridiculous story) and claimed they could not evaluate me. I feel like giving up....

My friend got into our community college nursing program with a 2.90. I wanted to go straight through the BSN program so I have a 3.47 and I'll let you know in October if I got in lol.

At my community college where I graduated from with my AA. You need at least a 3.6 and above and a TEAS of 80 and above to get accepted. If not you are not accepted . Basically either retake and get a higher Teas or you don't have a chance. I didn't apply because I went the BSN and not AN route.

With my first degree, my cumulative gpa was a 2.7. I am now a pre-nursing student and my gpa is now a 3.2.

4.0 because I knew I need to work my butt off to get into the school I want... Texas nursing schools are ridiculously competitive.

Specializes in Psychiatry.

Science - 4.0

Overall - 3.75

Specializes in Maternal Child, Home Health, Med/Surg.

Cumulative at WNC: 2.7

Cumulative at TMCC: 3.3

Pre-Nursing Specific at WNC: 3.0

Pre-Nursing Specific at TMCC: 3.3

So I'm working on it. My GPA is terrible. But, I still have AP 1, 2, and Micro to complete. I'm hoping I can get better grades there.

Science- 4.0

Cumulative- 3.74

I still have another semester of pre-reqs before I apply to a nursing program so it's a work in progress.

Cumulative GPA: 3.44

Science GPA: 3.8...still have to take Microbiology, Genetics, & Chemistry

Cumulative: 3.9

Science: 3.9

My school also requires the HESI exam and I received an 86% on that. I'm beginning the BSN program this fall. Can't wait!!

Science: 4.0

Cumulative: 4.0... but still have to take micro, , chemistry and nutrition

OP... What good is it really going to do for you having folks post their GPAs...aside from helping you beat yourself up some more for nada? Forget about everyone else. Unless they went to the same school and took the same classes as you did, it's not fair to your ego to compare.

I'm not referring to anyone that's posted a great GPA here... but OP could use some pick-me-up perspective. .. When I transferred to nursing school, I transferred in a 4.0. Another student also had a very high GPA. I earned my grades sitting behind a desk taking A&P exams that were timed essay and fill in the blank as well as timed labs standing with a blank sheet of paper in front of a cadaver full of 50-100 pins ...the other student got an A from an online class with no lab and not one proctored exam. I can give you a dozen similar examples. So you can see that not all As are the same....not all GPAs are created equal.

You seem determined and smart! That's going to get you far...you don't have to have the highest GPA on allnurses to prove it. :-) Just try to stay calm and focused. When you go to the school, stun everyone with you outstanding communication skills. Do well on entrance exams and essays. Most importantly reflect on the fact that you're doing an awesome job and take pride in all you have accomplished. .. A positive and flexible attitude works... I promise that. :-)

Specializes in Critical Care, Transplant..

3.54 overall, I screwed up years ago during my freshman year when I did not care so I have some old D's and C's pulling me down. Luckily my pre-req GPA is a perfect 4.0 and I only have Nutrition left so I don't think it will be moving at all.

3.54 but I'm acing everything this semester (self fulfilling prophecy)
