Please explain to me why people think this is weird?

Published

Ok. Maybe I am just not seeing it, but why do most people think it weird that I am allergic to oranges? I go to the doctor to for a visit and they ask what I am allergic to, I say oranges, the MA's or nurses look at me like I am nuts or like they have never heard of that before.

People have allergies to weird things but whats so weird about oranges.

Also, can anyone answer this for me because I keep getting 2 different answers:

1 pediatrician has told me that my allergy to oranges will be passed to my son, the next pediatrician says that there is no chance.

Who should I believe?

I am believing my motherly instinct and not letting him have oranges until he can tell me that he does not feel well after eating an orange. If I ingest any type of orange, I break out in severe hives, get an excruciating migraine, vomit, pass out, the works. So of course I am going to be protective of my son. Sorry, I had to vent about that, I am just frustrated because nobody seems to believe me about the allergy to oranges.

If you want wierd responses from people, try my allergy. I'm allergic to ALCOHOL! (Ingestion only.) As a teenager, I would just turn a blotchy red all over my body. As time went on, the reactions got more and more severe. It reached the point that one drink would make my heart pound and race and feel like it was going to jump out of my chest and I couldn't walk across the room without being severely winded. I gave up drinking altogether years ago.

This IS a family thing. My grandmother, my aunt, my aunt's couisin and one of my sisters has it too. (However my other sister and two brothers are totally unaffected and drink like fish.:D )

The reactions I get from people when I tell them I'm allergic to alcohol are disbelief and/or "oh, poor you!"

Don't feel alone, I actually know a fellow nurse who is allergic to alcohol..she even gets the blotchy red thing going. As for myself I found out I have an allergy to the metal nickel. Had to have ortho sx and doc asked about allergies..I knew I could only wear gold jewlery so I had to be tested before doc could decide what device he was using.

My Dad is allergic to alcohol too. At about 3 beers he starts to turn red, with simular symptoms. Doesn't stop him from drinking his beer.:uhoh3: It's definitely a family thing. My paternal grandmother's side of the family is all known for having an extremely low tolerance for alcohol. I flush red after a glass of wine.

Well, that's how it started with me too. But over time it's become very unpleasant to say the least and maybe even dangerous.

I'm allergic to my husband.

It is possible to develop allergies as you get older?

I've never been allergic to anything, but over the last 5 years or so, the list of things I react to keeps growing. First it was Band-Aids, then mangoes, and lately I seem to be having a reaction to dairy products. I don't know if it's lactose intolerance or an allergy. I eliminated dairy from my diet for a few days to see if that's what it was. Sure enough, when I added dairy again, my symptoms came roaring back (gas, bloating, diarrhea, cramps).

I also noticed something else. As a kid I had poison ivy all the time. While it was uncomfortable it really wasn't a big deal. I've had poison ivy twice in the last three years and both times I had horrible reactions to it - fever, lip swelling, angry red rash - that was nothing like what I had as a kid.

Can't give you much advise, but it's not weird that you are allergic to oranges. My cousin is allergic to satin. It's unusual, but true.

I have a reaction to peaches- my throat and lips start itching. I had a horrible reaction to something during clinicals for my CNA class. I had to go to the ER. Still don't know what that was from. I also get itchy lips from pineapple...but I love it so much I just can't stop eating it.

My food allergy is green bell peppers. I start with swelling of the face and difficulty breathing, I carry an Epi-pen and Benadryl with me at all times. I have to be very careful when eating out, because no one belives you can't eat them. I can not even eat food that has been cooked with a green bell pepper and had it taken out. I can eat red and yellow bell peppers in very small amounts, but it is not worth it to me to test my limits. The strange thing is, I eat all kinds of other peppers all the time and have no problem and I cook ALOT of India, Thai, Chinese dishes with large amounts of hot peppers and have never had a reaction. My doctor said it is not a common allergy but he has heard of it before.

I have a friend that is allergic to latex and vinyl. Imagine that trouble trying to find gloves she is not allergic too.

Since we're on the subject, I read once that LOTS of folks are allergic to alcohol. I get that flush too - across my chest and on my face. I also get it when I eat hot peppers. I had no idea that either of these were allergic reactions until I read that article.

However, I inherited a high tolerance for alcohol from my father's side of the family...:biggringi And I can't give up jalapenos and spicy curries!
