Please explain to me why people think this is weird?

Published

Ok. Maybe I am just not seeing it, but why do most people think it weird that I am allergic to oranges? I go to the doctor to for a visit and they ask what I am allergic to, I say oranges, the MA's or nurses look at me like I am nuts or like they have never heard of that before.

People have allergies to weird things but whats so weird about oranges.

Also, can anyone answer this for me because I keep getting 2 different answers:

1 pediatrician has told me that my allergy to oranges will be passed to my son, the next pediatrician says that there is no chance.

Who should I believe?

I am believing my motherly instinct and not letting him have oranges until he can tell me that he does not feel well after eating an orange. If I ingest any type of orange, I break out in severe hives, get an excruciating migraine, vomit, pass out, the works. So of course I am going to be protective of my son. Sorry, I had to vent about that, I am just frustrated because nobody seems to believe me about the allergy to oranges.

Ok, I have to ask....what are OASIS forms? And, what kind of motorcycles do you like? My husband's hobby is riding

OASIS forms are the home care forms used for patients who have Medicare or Medicaid. They have specific questions on that determine reimbursment for services to that specific patients. The OASIS assessment (intake) form is 14 pages long.

Since we're on the subject, I read once that LOTS of folks are allergic to alcohol. I get that flush too - across my chest and on my face. I also get it when I eat hot peppers. I had no idea that either of these were allergic reactions until I read that article.

However, I inherited a high tolerance for alcohol from my father's side of the family...:biggringi And I can't give up jalapeños and spicy curries!

Both Alcohol and hot peppers (or actually the capsicum in them) are vasodilators, especially if your not used to them. That could be all that is causing the redness. An allergy to them involves a bit more.

To add to the list of wierd allergies...

I'm allergic to peppers - no matter if they're hot or sweet, rocephin (but no other med in its class/category), and yellow dye number 5 - no other yellow dye, just number 5. Oh, and a common one, amoxacillin - stupid me, when I was a kid, I loved the taste of that yummy pink liquid - and I drank an entire bottle of my brother's rx.... i was puffy and covered in hives for a LONG time!!! No more cillins for me!

I think it's weird, but I am allergic to adhesive so I can't put bandaids on, I can it they are the tape kind. My mom is also allergic to adhesives

My sister has an allergy to oranges that first presented when she was around 25. She has 2 kids, one is allergic to all citrus and the other has no known allergies. I think your best bet is to wait until your child can communicate any symptoms to you.

I'm allergic to cheap chocolate and cashews. I don't have much of a problem with expensive dark chocolate, but the second i eat a snickers, cookies, or anything with cheap milk chocolate, i get pimples on my face and back

I've encountered several people from time to time with allergies to oranges and citrus.

Funny/scary story about citrus allergy:

I was having some work done on my house, and there was an electrician in my crawl space doing some wiring. His buddy was at the bottom of the ladder handing him stuff, giving him help, etc. The guy in the attic had been up there a while and it was getting hot, so he asked for some water. So his buddy at the bottom of the ladder handed him a bottle of water. The guy took it, drank it (didn't look at the bottle....couldn't really, the attic was dark), and with a couple of seconds, he stopped responding to his friend. We kept saying, "Hello, hello, what's up?" The guy's allergy to citrus was so severe, that his throat closed up IMMEDIATELY, because his friend had given him lemon Dasani without realizing it. Next thing we knew, the bottle of Dasani came falling out of the attic, dropped at the guy's feet and the second he looked at it, he realized that he'd given his buddy the lemon water. He looked at me with humongous bug-eyes, and yelled like in some crazy alien voice "He's allergic! He's allergic!" I said, "To water?" (which sounds so stupid now, but that was my immediate reaction). But then he said no, he was allergic to the lemon water. I ran in to the bathroom and got some benadryl and we had to put a straw in his throat to get him to be able to take it. (that's the only airway I've ever had to put in, by the way!.....a bendable straw!) Turns out he had an epipen in his tool box, but we didn't even think to look for it. The benadryl worked within a minute it seemed like.

Then the guy just kept working. He wasn't even sick. Crazy thing.

The weirdest allergy I've heard of is to elephants. That's right, elephants! My stepdad is allergic to them. The first thing I asked is "How do you know you're allergic to ELEPHANTS?". I guess from too many visits to the zoo?

oranges lol

try being a nurse and coping with being allergic to alcohol swabs used on pt's prior to giving injections or taking bloods. i break out in a major rash from them, and my daughter and i are both allergic to the tapes used. any of the paper type tapes and elastoplast.

i can drink alcohol but keep away from me with the swabs and the hand wash liquids. i have to use hand wash lotion which is triclosan based instead.:gandalf: often need to supply my own bottle if i am doing agency shifts

I don't know why it is weird - someone on our L&D unit has the same allergy and their are big signs posted on entry to unit about No oranges or orange products on the unit.

I have heard of it before. At the hospital where I work per diem, a nurse in L+D is severely allergic to oranges-has had severe reactions and almost died. There are signs posted all over the floor by the hospital that "no oranges, orange products, or scents are allowed" on the floor. That includes lotions, citrus-based perfumes and those that have hidden citrus ingredients. Another nurse ignored the signs and brought an orange to the unit, and she was escorted off the floor. The nurse who was allergic had to go home because she could not take the chance.Better safe than sorry.
