Please explain to me why people think this is weird?

Published

Ok. Maybe I am just not seeing it, but why do most people think it weird that I am allergic to oranges? I go to the doctor to for a visit and they ask what I am allergic to, I say oranges, the MA's or nurses look at me like I am nuts or like they have never heard of that before.

People have allergies to weird things but whats so weird about oranges.

Also, can anyone answer this for me because I keep getting 2 different answers:

1 pediatrician has told me that my allergy to oranges will be passed to my son, the next pediatrician says that there is no chance.

Who should I believe?

I am believing my motherly instinct and not letting him have oranges until he can tell me that he does not feel well after eating an orange. If I ingest any type of orange, I break out in severe hives, get an excruciating migraine, vomit, pass out, the works. So of course I am going to be protective of my son. Sorry, I had to vent about that, I am just frustrated because nobody seems to believe me about the allergy to oranges.

I Would like to say hi to everyone Iam a mother of two girls, 3 and 5 and I am going to school for my RN after being a CNA for six years, I could use some words of encouragment, considering few of the nurses I work with have them for me. Any good advice about nursing would be awesome!!!

I totally understand. I have a weird allergy as well that illicits weird reactions also. I am allergic to temperature change. Also known as Cold Urticaria. I get in a pool I break out, I go from outside to inside (warm to cold like in air conditioning) I break out. I excerise, I break out. You can only imagine when I am out in public. I am a student nurse and I wear long sleeves so my patients don't have to ask if I am ok. It is a nuisance more than anything, the only time I have to really worry is in the winter. then I can't leave without my Epi pen.

p.s. I think it was passed down to my youngest son.

I have a friend who (I think) has the same thing: he's allergic to the cold. I thought he was joking when he said it to me - a lot of people here in FL will say that as a joke when asked why they moved to this state - but he truly does have these allergic, rash-like reactions when the weather gets really cold, specifically when he experiences a drastic temperature change, like walking outside into the snow from his heated home. Poor guy grew up in Minnesota, too! I think he wants to move to Ecuador. ;)

My sister got hives from strawberries until she reached puberty, since then it anaphylaxis to "red shell fish" or put another way, "shellfish that can walk or swim" ie lobster and shrimp.

That is kind of interesting.

I have anaphylaxis to iodine contrast, lobster & crab but can eat shrimp (and use betadine).

Have you been to see an allergist and be skin tested for the allergy? I worked in an allergy office and orange was on our food skin test panel. I don't think this is wierd at all. I can't tell you how many things I have tested for that I never thought anyone could ever be allergic to.
