PLEASE advise on Biology 111...

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I just started my bio 111 class last week and I am completely overwhelmed already. Is it normal to feel as though you dropped in from another planet while listening to lectures in bio 111? :uhoh21: I don't have a clue WHAT he is talking about and the text doesn't help me much either. I don't even know HOW to study for it because it's so confusing! :crying2: I really am concerned can anyone advise? :uhoh21:

Well, first of all, I'm not sure what your BIO 111 class is. What is the title?

Also, ALWAYS ask questions to your instructor, and utilize the college's tutoring!!!! The college I attend has a science resource room where there are models, photos, microscopes, slides, etc, and tutors willing and eager to help!

Good luck.

is this the prep class for anatomy & physiology? i would read your chapter before every class if possible then after the teacher lectures go back and focus on the points he/she focused on in lecture and make up some study cards for memorization. try to think in terms of your own body so you have a frame of reference when thinking of how body systems work. Be positive.

oops, sorry...I just assume people know what the heck i'm talking about. :rotfl: Anyway, bio 111 is an intro to biology that includes biochem etc. I was thinking that I may look into a tutor and I will definitely look into any resource rooms. Thanks.

It's sort of a prep for A&P. Its intro to bio but it's a bunch of other things rolled into it. I have some 3 x 5 cards I may use. I think the problem is I can't use my body or any body :chuckle for reference because when dealing with cells, atoms etc, I cannot SEE them so out of sight out of mind I guess. I spent the afternoon at the library checking out kiddie books on bio so hopefully it will help. Thanks.

Can you say exactly what it is you are working on? You said biochem and then you said cells and atoms.

Are you working on atoms/molecules/ions, etc etc? Cell parts? Let me know I may have a few resources for you.

BTW if you are doing some Chem a good book I used was " Chemistry for Biology Students". It's a little workbook

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0805339701/qid=1109545349/sr=8-1/ref=pd_ka_1/002-7585343-8027259?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

i found that for learning parts of cells and tissues it helped for me to draw and color a "typical cell" with the RER, SER, nucleus and its inner structures, ribosomes lysosomes etc... then come up with at least 1 function for every organelle that you draw or color.

wow! my hand hurts :rotfl:

Hi again

I'm assuming you are starting off here

the study of life

the molecules of cells

cell structure and functions

membrane structure and functions

cell divison

metabolism:energy and enzymes

cellular respiration

OK I would still definately recommend the Into. Chem for Biology students.

Here is the book companion site that I used last year for Molecular + Cells.

You can go chapter by chapter and there are flashcards/self quizzes/etc

http://www.brookscole.com/cgi-wadsworth/course_products_wp.pl?fid=M20b&product_isbn_issn=0534391753&discipline_number=22

This is actually the site that was the same as the CD that came in my book...I would take the quizzes over and over and over until I had them all right from the get go.

For cellular respiration/photosynthesis/etc here the the website of the professor I had last year...click on "Catonsville Biology tutorials" on the left

http://student.ccbcmd.edu/~kdalton/

I know I have a ton of others...let me know if there is a specific thing you need help on and I will do my best to help you.

Specializes in trauma/surg.

Most books have a study guide (book) that you can purchase as well. Also make an appointment with the prof. to discuss your concerns. Most would be flattered if you asked what the best way to study for their particular class. Also at the end of the term, if they know you and how much effort you put into the class, they might round up come grade time... I had Micro biology last semester and many failed because they didn't take the time to ask the prof of his expectations and come test time, they were lost... :o

Thanks so much for all your resources. I will look into the book and check out the sites. :p

I will try to look into a study guide. I have discussed my concerns with my instructor after each class. He told me that he tells us EXACTLY whats on his tests, word for word. Thats a relief but I am concerned that I wont have an overall grasp of bio except for what is on the tests. Does that make sense? :uhoh3:
