Plan to become nurse practitioner any advice

Published

I'm 19 thinking about nursing to be NP not RN

so any posts about this any type of advice

I'm interested in spending the majority of career being a NP not really interested in RN

is that okay?

I'm not a fan of the bedside nurisng of RN but I like the idea of what of I've heard of NP

is that okay or should I not consider this as a career because I don't want to a Rn or do bedside nursing

basically is okay to choose NP without liking the idea of RN

I thought Np or PA were very similar except NP can work independently if they want to...

If you don't want to be talked to disrespectfully, may I suggest you forego Nursing school altogether, and perhaps consider a good Charm school. You are asking for advice from people who have already paid their dues, yet YOU are very rude and disrespectful to those people trying to give you some guidance.

I see that you are very young, but I can tell you that a person who is dealing with an illness does not want to be un-cared for by someone with that condescending attitude.....even if you are only wiping their bum!

You know, I get the feeling that it's not that you don't WANT to wipe butt, but that you think you're too good to do it.

THAT attitude will get you no where fast in this field. No...no one likes to wipe butt, but if that is what it takes to care for a patient, then you man up and do it.

I personally HATE sputum...but I deal with it because one aspect of my job is one small aspect of my job.

Why do you want to be an NP?

I never wanted to be a nurse. I went to LPN school because I needed to find a job. I literally fell in love with nursing.

Nursing is sooooo much more than wiping butt or passing pills....you have such a misconstrued view of what it means to be an RN. I suggest you shadow an RN in your local hospital.

The above poster is right...

There is nothing like the satisfaction of seeing your residents clean and dry....or even better when they thank you for taking the time to clean them up! I have always hated when a patient or resident apologizes for messing themselves and someone having to clean them up....that is my job, to take care of those who can't care for themselves.

urghhhh I really was not going to give a reply back but Shannon I don't think I'm "too good" for anything. And I really want to get that out there! I've baby sat kids and therefore did diapers and everything however with that said ... I'm just thinking that this career might not be right for my personality similar to how you might like doing accounting, or writing papers. It's just personality... Also I hope I didn't offend anyone because that was not my intention. I'm going to job shadow a RN, and NP. But because I was wanted for information before hand I came on this website. Most of the responses were quite disturbing. Maybe I was trying have something validated for me when it just wasn't for me

consider the following article which what it says about bedside nursing

Bedside nursing is "hard" and therefore undesirable â€" Crit Care Nurse

One of the lines was "Furthermore, I would never advise my children to become nurses, unless they get a master's or doctoral degree."

the author is a RN btw

When you read thing like that that why is it so bad that my goal was for a masters in nursing but now I think I get the point

If nursing the beginning stages and the very basis of it is not for me then the advance levels will not be either!

I think I was just trying to address my concerns but it was interpreted disrespectfully.

PA seems much more for me and other careers that I'm considering

Maybe MD is the way to go for me or optometry.

btw to the person I said I have to go to charm school, then so half the people who replied

so far my perception is not a good one

way to go in representing nurses positively!

I want to thank the following users cranberry muffin, core0, BCgradnurse(you're awesome and obviously secure with yourself), noahsmama!!!!

you guys are great... thank you so much for your responses and I would love to hear more from you guys only but I think the best way will be job shadowing. I already have appointments for next week...

I just want to apologize to all those tho interpreted my comments negatively... I do not think less of any profession

It's just what's right for me...

My mother is a doctor a psychairst to be a exact and my uncle once told her he does not beleive in psychiatry could not do her field

my mother is secure in her field and laughed! she is helping tons of people, has financial security and loves her job. She did not get defensive

To those who got so defensive

it just makes me feel like you're insecure!

It's just different stuff for different people

And what is the right fit

some people love accounting where others think it is so boring... some can't stand the sight of blood ... while think the human body is so cool (I for one is amazed that the human body mechanics and the complexities of it)

so people are touchy feeling, while others are emotionally numb

If nursing is right for you I'm happy and did not think less of it... The question is

would this career work for me

I'll find out after I job shadow

Your post motivates me.

Wow, I was in shock by what all I read here today. Curious 88, people are not here to judge you, but to educate you. I am only 24 years old and still young, but I am very eager to learn from people who have more wisdom and knowledge than me, and who are where I hope to be when I am their age. I just completed 1st level clinical, and there will always be stuff that you don't want to do( like wiping butts), but it's part of a nurse's job to take care of their patients. It's not all about wiping butts, my dear. If you have this attitude then you may want to go into a different field completely because honestly if you want to be a nurse bad enough, you will get over having to wipe butts. This year was all about crital thinking skills and learning how to interact and bond with our patients. It was an awesome experience. I am presonally very grateful to be where I am today. I cannot wait to graduate and become a registered nurse because it will be the best thing I have ever accomplished. It's an honor to have the title registered nurse. All the people here are trying to give you a reality check and are not being mean one bit. They are preparing you because if you don't like what the job entails then maybe it's not for you and that's okay, but don't try and tell people with more years of experience(possibly more years than you've been alive) what nursing involves. And yes, several of your comments did sound snotty and like you were too good to wipe your patient's rear. I can assure you that people here are not insecure about their title as "R.N." It did personally irritate me to read such arrogance in a 19 year old with no experince what-so-ever to come on here and "speak" as if we are beneath you. But, hey this is all my opinion too. You will be so lucky to even get accepted into any nursing program with your attitude. Just sayin'. Sorry y'all had to rant!

I have been a bedside nurse for a long time now and can tell you that bedside nurses get invaluable experience no that can be applied no matter what field of nursing you choose. I work OB and no disrespect intended but I can tell you that as a nurse I have seen midwives go straight through their masters program and never work the floor as a labor nurse. They don't get the same level of respect and a lot of nurses question their skills. We would much rather work with someone with experience as well as education because when their is an emergency - and their is ALWAYS as emergency in EVERY field - it is the experience that kicks in coupled with book knowledge, they go hand in hand.

I am nurse, hear me ROAR!!! I like wiping butts. I also like saving lives. I do it every shift. Most docs don't even know how to do CPR or have a clue about the ACLS algorithyms. If saving lives if grunt work, then just call me Miss Piggy! OINK OINK!!! LOL!

Why cant YOU talk like this instead of the massive amount of disrespect you have shown these nurses? You have come off as nothing but an immature brat. GROW UP

It is like if you are to meet a future mate. You have a list of many things that you dislike in a mate. Will you still date this person knowing that they have these faults that you don't like? Well, maybe. What would be the outcome? You might say no! These are not the qualities that I desire. (decide not to go to nursing school) You may date them, and actually grow to appreciate those qualities that you formerly detested. (learn to love nursing) You may date them and decide that you absolutely cannot deal with the undesirables. (try nursing & hate it) If you appreciate the qualities, perhaps you will marry that person. When you marry you learn from each other, become a team member & then perhaps have children a few years later. (work as nurse then go to NP school) How strong would your relationship be if you married them right after met them? Would you know enough about the person to have a successful relationship? Probably not. While experience may not be absolutely necessary (It most cases it seems to be, though), it is necessary to see the benefits that the experience can give you.

Becoming a NP is necessary learning process. Every step of the nursing education adds more layers and depth to your knowledge. It will be very hard for you to get to your goal if you detest everything in between. Nursing school is tough and very demanding. I couldn't imagine accomplishing it if I wasn't truly passionate about it. I don't know very many students (if any) who are not really interested in it. Even many of the passionate students fail at one time or another. I have just finished my first year of nursing school and am eligible to sit for LPN boards. Going into next semester I will have classmates who have 10+ years of experience as a LPN. Who is more knowledgable, me or them? They are because they have more experience. They have had the opportunity to apply their nursing knowledge in real life situations. The more you learn, the more you realize you have so much left to learn. You never know everything!

Overall, I would say that nursing is much less gross than I anticipated. Nursing school takes a certain level of maturity and humbleness. I am very happy I waited several years after high school to pursue this career, because I don't think I had either of those qualities at 19. Best wishes to you, the OP.
