Got a call the other night, demanding to know if a man could still have an erection when he was dead, if it happened automatically.

I told him that was not something I was going to answer, he demanded to know why I didn't know, wasn't I a nurse??!! Go get another nurse!!

Told him again, this is not something I was going to discuss with him, so he told me he would be reporting me to both our local newspapers!

What's yours?

I dated a meteorologist many years ago, and he did a report on "Barometric Babies." I sort of helped him with the report as he needed the name of an OB/GYN who could help him. The report basically stated that in the future, we may be able to predict when babies will arrive according to anticipated high/low pressures over the area. This was in '88, and I don't think that in 20 years we are any closer to predicting a specific baby's arrival based on barometric pressure.

Sort of interesting theory though, but I believe there needs to be other factors taken into consideration.

i dont know about OB but i know it sure effects dementia residents as bad as a full moon

Laugh if you want, but we do fill-up with laboring moms any time there is a storm -- a greater than usual % come in c/o SROM... hmmmmmmmm.... maybe there is something to that barometric pressure thing....

I've been a neo nurse for a long time. It's not just an old wives' tale --

storms & full moons = busy birthing unit. ;)

when I worked OB, on stormy nights, we used to take special care double-checking all the birthing rooms to make sure they were all stocked up appropriately (especially our "precipitous delivery" kits) because we were guaranteed to be running all night with deliveries - we had one of our FP docs have her water break at 35 weeks (textbook pregnancy up until then) and she and her also FP doc husband came in - he was like "Wow, I can't believe her water broke!" - she was like "Dumbass, how hard was it raining on the way here?" - guess she believed it too!!

speaking of full moons - ask anyone who works LTC with dementia patients, ED or in law-enforcement about how busy they are...............

A full moon will turn any LTC/Alzheimers center into a psych unit.....

or when the cable co calls and ask for such and such - who happens to be a resident - and they get mad when you tell them call in morning when office is open as they atke care of the residents bill.

I work psych ....i worked nightshift, we had telemarketers calling BAD at ALL hours it seemed. I answered to a woman with a bad accent wanting to speak to one of our residents, who was slightly demented. (alzheimer's, schizo, psychosis etc etc) I tried to explain to the woman that it was a LTC facility and he wasn't capable of talking etc etc. She argued with me, and he just so happened to wander by the nurses station, SO, i handed him the phone. He went through a barrage of questions and apparently was answering all of them for her. Needless to say, I got reprimanded the next week I came into work. Some crap about a satellite company being very PO'd about coming all the way to our facility to find out a resident wanted a premium package. :rotfl:

BTW, we keep all the full moon dates circled on every calendar in the facility.:lol2: We stay prepared!

Yeah, kinda like when the administrator thought it was real funny when i let one of the residents sing on the intercom one afternoon too. She was singing the eygyptian themed song about the people in france don't wear any underpants ...

I didn't know he was still upstairs *shrug* some crap about it being degrading or some crap. The resident started it! hehe :rotfl: hehe I don't care, the residents are happy and stay amused LOL

I am a alzheimers nurse and could sit here all day and entertain the crowd with stories too... like the lady who always spoke in 3rd person and thought she was at a airport. SHe would say "attention attention she said I could leave out the terminal door"..always trying to get out the secured doors. This is the same woman who did escape one time and told me she was on her way to the govenors house for dinner..lol we had a good time getting her back in.:lol2::lol2: Then there was a male resident who was a carpenter and another male resident that was a electrician. These two were found under the nurses station one night re-wiring the electricity ..."cause it needed to be done". Then there was a female gang fight over a ball of yarn.. that was pretty funny.. I could go on and on...:lol2::lol2:

Talking about the old wives tales, when I was pregnant with my last child I worked in a Psychiatric Daytreatment program (basically adult daycare center) You wouldn't believe how many times I was told by one of the clients (as they were to be called), if I put my hands over my head that I would wrap the cord around the babies neck. If I kept getting upset or frustrated that I would mark my baby (didn't help when she came out with a stork bite on her forehead, then I heard "I told you so".) I had to watch everything I did or I was going to be reprimanded by these little old ladies.

:angryfire I'm in a level 1. One night while assigned in the minor emergency care I was caring for a woman who was complaining of a "knot" (that only she could see) on her wrist, oh yes it had been there for 10 years and was an emergency tonight. Meanwhile there were 4 traumas going on a family of 4 shot including 2 children. I explained many times that this patient would be waiting a while because our MD was busy in the trauma bay, her response, " but I was here first" At that time the trauma team came running through with the 2 children. She went a little pale upon the sight. My response, " i'm very sorry ma'am, but when the doctor is finished trying to save those children, He'll be right with you."

Last night, someone called and asked to speak to "an attending". The charge nurse directed the phone to the attending. The person calling then asked the attending what the relationship was to tooth pain and rectal pain. When the attending realized it was not another doctor on the other line and refused to answer, the pt called the doctor a "communist" and threatened to "blow his brains out". Crazy people out there. Same person called back later to ask when the "communist took over medicine".

Ill never forget being pregnant with my second child and one day my mom called (my mom was about 70 at the time) she "what are you doing". I said oh Im outside hanging clothes out on the line..she started screaming "oh my God what is wrong with you . you are going to wrap the cord around that babies neck and she will die".. She wanted me to call 911 so I could go get "untangled" at the hospital.

My mom yelled at me for a similar thing. I was painting the baby's room a few weeks before he came out, so I was stretching my arms up over my head. When he was born, he did have the cord wrapped around his neck 3x!! So, maybe there is some "truth" to a few of the old wive's tales. Who knows?
