NO LUNCH? NO BREAKS? Is that common in nursing?
I live in California and while we do have ratios and we are unionized...I work alongside martyrs who do not take breaks. We do have 2 nurses who are "supposed" to be breaking us, but the reality is...they are being saddled w/ more tasks from management and being bogged down in things such as stocking nurse supplies, doing all the staffing needs for the dept, assisting w/ other patient care duties, and the list goes on. We are not being offered the breaks, except for the 30 mins meal breaks. I'm probably one of the few who just started (been a nurse more than 5 yrs) taking my 15 min breaks. I feel a lot happier doing this, but I get attitude for asking for one. If I don't get one, I claim it and get paid 1 hour time for it.

Is Joint Commission more hindrance than help?
I think it's a hindrance too. I had the unique perspective of actually being a patient at my own hospital while JCAHO was there!! I had my c-section and I was stalled getting placed into a room because the poor nurse had to finish this special charting just for JCAHO before sending me on my way. Then there were other people who wanted to see my chart while my nurse was trying to hurry through her paperwork. It was a mess.

This just infuriates me!
Oh, I forgot to add. I'm one of those nurses who had both of my babies in the summertime (2005 and 2007) thus giving me all the holidays off!! I take extended maternity leave off, so I won't be back until January. Oh, and the 2nd birth was an ELECTIVE c-section. How's that for manipulating the holiday calendar lol.

This just infuriates me!
You said exactly what I was thinking...but didn't include in my post! There's nothing more annoying/irritating than people who get up in other people's business and worry about things that don't include them. Thanks for posting!

This just infuriates me!
How do you know for sure that she has has "no problems"? I had severe pelvic/pubic bone pain during the last trimester of my pregnancy. I was able to act functional at work, even though I was writhing in pain on the inside. I didn't want people to feel sorry for me or think I was incapable of working. I didn't complain about it either. I had a hard time walking, but you could not tell by looking at me. There is no way for certain that you know for a fact that she is working "with no problems". Some people are great at hiding it...I'm one of them.

Injured Football Player
Hell, we can't even trust our toys to be safe coming from China. I don't know if I could trust China to provide a safe stem cell transplant. Seriously.

Scrubs/medical apparel...where to buy?
Where do you guys normally buy your scrubs? I usually buy mine in a store nearby, but only during clearance time. I just received a card in the mail that is for an online scrub store. They are having a 3 day sale. Thought I'd pass the link on since I know I can't possibly be the only one pinching pennies over here Has anyone had any experience shopping online for scrubs? I'm going to try it and see how it goes :) http://www.scrubscastrovalley.com

Telemetry/heart attack scenario help
I'm an oncology nurse and have a question for any tele nurse who can help here. The info I'm presenting here is second hand from my mom (she is not in the medical profession). Our grandpa had an MI last Tuesday and was rushed to the hospital where they subsequently placed a stent. He has been in poor health for a long time with diabetes, high cholesterol, morbid obesity, history of numerous blood clots (on coumadin), etc etc. According to my mother, his heart actually stopped and they had to perform CPR and then the stent was placed. A couple of days later he was transferred out of ICU and to the floor (not sure what dept) without any telemetry monitoring...yet he is still in the hospital and supposedly he is doing well. I'm wondering...is it normal for a pt who came in with MI and then gets a stent to be off the telemetry monitoring while still hospitalized (remember he was transferred out of ICU within a couple of days of admit)?? Could this be an oversight on their part, or is this the norm and should I tell my mom to stop worrying?

Are you willing to pay more taxes to ensure health coverage for all?
NO way. It's my money, I worked for it. I get taxed out the behind as it is. Absolutely no way!

Pregnant: What do I really care about it the hospital?
One day I was assigned (this was when I was about 28 wks pg) to a patient who was in isolation with I-131 radiation, a patient with shingles, and a violent psych patient who already put an employee out on disability and kicked a security guard in the chest.....yeah...our hospital REALLY cares about my safety!

Nurses as Patients: What was your best/worst experience as a patient?
Best: My entire birthing experience! From the RN who did the nonstress test to all the nurses who took care of me until I went home...they were wonderful!! I wrote a letter to the hospital letting them know how great they were. The funny thing...I had my baby at a RIVAL hospital too Worst: Calling our doctor's office! They NEVER return calls! It's sooo frustrating. My husband took a blood test to see if he had mono (Epstein barr virus EBV) and was told he would get his test results on Friday. No one called back. So he called Friday around 2pm and the person who releases tests was gone for the weekend! So he calls back on monday and leaves a msg. No call back. Calls again Tues and gets the right person. He is POSITIVE and is told to avoid being around pregnant women and children...I am 6 mos pregnant and we have a 1 year old son!!!!!!!!!!1:angryfire :angryfire :angryfire

Newbie questions: Assisting Male patients Issues
I agree with ShayRN! Yes is the answer to both questions. If you have a problem with just assisting someone with bathing and urinating....wait until you have to stick your finger in the rectum for a suppository. OR stick a catheter in the member.
