Phillips Beth Israel Applicants

Published

Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone has applied to the Phillips Beth Israel School of Nursing in NYC for the coming year? I am looking to get into their part-time evening program that would begin in Spring 2011. I'm taking the NLN this Wed and really nervous about it, really just the verbal part....

So, weird question (and don't judge me :saint:), but does anyone know when we have to take the drug test? I don't drink, smoke or do anything else, but on occasion I like to smoke weed, and I just want to make sure it's completely out of my system. Thanks

No judging here, but there is a drug screening as part of the health assessment. it's in the last paragraph of the acceptance letter. "In order to ensure the safety of all students, faculty and patients, a background check and drug screening will be required prior to entry into the program."

So I would definitely stop now, drink lots of fluids, and quit it! i know it's just weed, but it's totally not worth jeopardizing a future career in healthcare!

I wonder if you would have mentioned at the interview that you occasionally "like to smoke weed" if you still would have been accepted. Too bad for those appliccants that don't smoke, were equally qualified, and were rejected. It's hard not to be judgemental.

Cathy,

Everyone has their own outlet. As I said, I don't drink or do anything else. I know plenty of people who can't drink enough when they go out or are always popping pills--and we all know how good that is for your liver. I hardly think that me occasionally smoking has any bearing on my ability as a future nurse. I'm still a compassionate person and truly want to do good for others. I know that I deserve to be in the program and earned my place just as much as the next person. I lost my brother a few years back, and I found it a little easier to begin coping with his loss and dealing with my own anxiety if I smoked now and then. Mind you, I had never smoked once prior to his death. Keep your judgements to yourself, please; I thought this board was to be supportive. Anyway, I knew going into the program I would be quitting because I want to focus on being the best nurse I can be, and in fact I already have quit. I was simply wondering if I needed to take extra precautions to clean out my system. Sheesh

Marcos,

I believe you'll be fine if you have already quit as long as they don't do a hair follicle test. It stays in your hair for months. Anyway, I'm sorry some were giving you a hard time about it but I have to agree, its not worth jeapardizing your future over. My husband used to smoke like everyday and when he landed a job with Con Edison that stopped fast. He hasn't touched the stuff in over 7 years so you'll be fine. Replace that habit with another, like meditation or exercise. You may even have to take a drink once in a while. We're in for a bumpy ride! :)

Thanks Jayzleena,

It's upsetting when someone tells you you didn't deserve to get in as much as the next person after all of your hard work, but I appreciate your post.

I've definitely considered doing something like yoga or meditation in its place, so maybe now is the time! And yes, I hear we are in for a bumpy ride, but I am very much looking forward to it! :)

Glad I could help. :D I think I'll start with the yoga too. At least I'll know how to cope with all the stress come Fall.

I got in. YEAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I read on later posts that you've quit, so good for you! As you stated, you can always redirect your energies towards something like meditation or yoga that would definitely be just as relaxing.

I'm just hoping that your username is not the same as your real name, in the event someone from the school just happens to browse these threads (and I know for a fact one other school has an admissions rep trolling this board reading threads that concern their nursing school).

Not to worry you at all, I'm just saying. Good luck to you!

Whoo! congrats Aleatha!!! :yeah:

ok, so I was wondering if anyone here has done the micro or A&P cleps at excelsior. I seriously just shelled out almost $600 to take 2 tests! :uhoh3: the website is still being super vague about what I should expect. Anyone know what they're like? I'm going to get the practice tests as soon as my confirmation email comes in, but some sort of indication of how much preparing I'm going to need to do would definitely ease my mind! ...Or freak me out horribly!

Anyone here apply for the Hillman and/or Karpas scholarships? Just curious when decisions on scholarship aid is decided...

theyre only due right about now, so im guessing it will take a while till decisions are made.
