Nurses Men
Published Aug 1, 2005
I'm still think of getting into the nursing but is still worried that I might be the only guy taking this course. I feel that I will be the only guy out of 50 in my class. When you were in nursing class, how many guys were in there?

At orientation in May, I noticed that a good 30% of the 100 students in my class are men. It could have been higher, even.

We started with 44 students, 4 men. One dropped, one became an LPN, and two RNs. It was never a problem for me, the girls liked having me around. I made some very good friends in school.

I just finished a Nurse Aide course and three of us out of a total of ten were guys. Our class had great dynamics and we had a great deal of fun. In addition, I was just accepted to a second degree B.S.N. program and 4 out of 12 of us are guys. I am excited and do not anticipate any problems. So far, the nursing faculty have been extremely supportive. I am sure you will have a good experience. Good Luck.
Have a wonderful day and a bright future.

Out of an original class of 32 we had 4 guys. Now were down to 19 & 2. One got out on med maths, one stopped at LPN, leaving myself and one other.
That said, it has been a blast being a guy in the program. You get to learn all the "secret" stuff women talk about, you're the model for assessments 'cause you can dof your shirt without turning 10 shades of red, and clinicals are a whole lot more interesting (you get the patients that you can really learn on).
On the downside, I can't tell you how many times I've had to say "No, I'm not a doctor, I'm the nurse." And there was one occaision where I heard the comment that men are nurses because they failed medical school. I countered that one with: I'm not a doctor because I want to take care of people, not treat diseases. People are more fun to help. That got there attention and I never had a problem since.
Don't worry about being the only guy. Enjoy it.

Hi,
I am female, and we have had about 3 guys in a class of 50 or so girls. I don't think people pay attention to that though. What you need to realize is that nursing is a highly respected profession, and there ar no men jobs or women jobs. Your business is just to show up, do the work, and let other people worry about their business. If you want to be a nurse, why are you concerned about how many other males will be in the class with you? You'll be fine.

To be honest, I cannot give you an exact figure, as I am finishing my prereqs right now, with nursing to start in fall 2006. I can tell you this much though, we are all over the campus! All the guys in my Bio, Micro, and A&P were all pre nursing. My advisor tells me male nursing students currently outnumber the females!!!
