  1. In 1990 I got my first overseas nursing experience in one of the hospitals in Milan Italy and during my first months it was so hard to learn the language and at the same time adjust to the environment. Everyday after my duty I go to my Italian class which I started studying back home before I left. In the ward I have a senior nurse to run to in case I got rattled with the language since it was my first week in the ward ...one day I was assisting an Alzheimer patient to the bathroom and every time I make something that she likes she keep on saying "che carina come sei brava"...and with a smile. so I was so overwhelmed excited that she likes the way I care for her but I wondered why she called me Carina?.....after almost an hour the patient was ready...dressed up, hair done and with the perfume sprayed all over...suddenly the patient sneeze it was so strong that her false teeth fly out and landed to the other patient who was sleeping then....the bad thing is it landed in her face! The other patient got so mad that she threw it out of the window....gosh...I wanted to laugh but I cant my patient is already upset then and the other patients in the room were all laughing , suddenly my patient started to cry looking for her false teeth....so I need to go out and look for it outside and I guess it took me 15 to 20 minutes to find it....when I found it I gave it back to her and again I heard her say " grazie carina signorina"......so I wondered again and this time I told the patient "Prego signora ma io sono Gemma non e Carina"... my senior nurse and the other patients heard me and they told me that Carina means your nice.....the patient is not addressing my name......there was laughter in the crowd but at least my patient was contented with my care in spite the false teeth hassle...im nice.....che carina.....
  2. Nobody persuaded me to be a nurse, it was my own decision. In my high school days i was so much attracted with the white cloths the nun in our school was wearing and i also enjoy all the voluntary works they are doing especially when there is a medical mission the school will sponsor, so i always join the group. Thus i have a feeling of fulfillment in doing so, i studied in an all girls school then. But i dont want to be a nun so i was trying to visualize what other profession has the same white uniform and the same passion of helping the sick. It was then when the nursing profession came into my mind.:redbeathe
  3. Im 41 and and been a nurse since i graduated 21 years ago and i love exploring the profession from non critical , CCU nurse, neuro med nurse, oncolgy and bone marrow nurse.....i just get hooked on it & now im on my 3rd year as an Occupational Health Nurse......still learning and enjoying.....:roll :flowersfo :yeahthat:
  4. It was our last day in DR, actually the last case we needed before graduation. I was waiting for my friend since I finished first and cleaning my area, when suddenly the woman delivering near my area shouted very loud and gave birth to a baby with a ball like parasites sticked together and while the DR nurse is holding the newborn baby the ball like parasites fell on the floor ....oh my and they start crawling like earthworms.....dont even touch the spaghetti we prepared for our lunch......
  5. Dreams can be redirected to positive ones, just think of the good things you enjoy most being a nurse or what it attracts you why you want to become one.....dont allow negative forces to ruin your dreams......
  6. Hi Aggiew! What is COHN-S? As far as I know you can be A Certified Occupational Health Nurse after practicing OHN for 5 years at least and has attended equivalent hours of trainings & seminars and attended school to be a COHN ( graduate school). This is a Philippine setting , I did get infor coz' i intend to pursue my plan to be a COHN since im on my way to my 3rd year as OHNP. Though attending school is impossible right now since my work is full time but i have plans.
  7. Hi!, Ive been an RN and shifted to OHN and untill now i worked as an OHN in a canstruction site. It was a great help to have experienced a hospital setting before going into OHN. Some company would prefer a licensed nurse and has a hospital experience at least for 2 years and when your accepted you have to undergo trainings like CPR and basic life support , but sometimes it depend upon the company if your an NP and has a RED CROSS ID as certified First Aider and has a lot of seminars related to OHN surely you would be accepted. Try it out and you'll surely enjoy the experience .
  8. I studied in a private all girl school in my high school years with nuns , their white dress attracts me so much , but then i said if im going to be like them its such mess i can't be like you know staying in one room and meditaitng the whole day. That' i decided to become a nurse. its a noble job and no regrets im enjoying it to the fullest till this time.
  9. We need male nurses actually, i would encourage some male friends to enroll, nursing profession is a challenging career, im proud that here in the Philippines there are many males nurses.
