Pediatric Teaching Project - Need Suggestions

Hello all,

I am currently taking Peds, and we have a teaching project coming up. The project has to be focused on a specific age group (teaching has to be appropriate to their developmental level). I was just wondering what topics (with appropriate age group) should my group do. I have seen on this forum ideas about handwashing and healthy eating. Any other suggestions besides these popular topics?

Thanks in advance.

Maybe something else cute and germ related similar to hand washing. My sister always had an odd nose phobia with my kids. lol She was afraid they would stick things up their nose and have them get things lodged or something... Anyway, what evolved from this was a cute song she made up called "Do not stick your fingers in your nose". Something along this route could incorporate cold season and using tissue for coughs and sneezes, or if they don't have tissue available why to cover up using the arm instead of the hand. Also, for older kids, you could go the route of not sharing drinks with your BFFs or "long term" (2 week :chuckle) BF or GF.

I was also watching with my son this cute song that was germ related on Yo Gabba Gabba about germs and not eating your food after it falls on the ground. You still hear teens or even parents (if they only took micro!) saying "5 second rule". I remember, something with that similar concept, when I was a kid the saying "God made dirt and dirt don't hurt" for that precious fallen candy. You know this still goes on.

All sorts of germie related things if you think back to your childhood, or have any or observe any kids' behaviors.

Thanks for the great ideas. :) I'll be sure to let my group know. Any more ideas are still welcome.

Thanks again.

:) hi! i remember when i had to do this in nursing school. it was alot of fun, so here are some suggestions from when i was in peds:

i personally did nutrition and healthy eating (fruits and vegetables instead of junk, we brought baby carrots, crackers, fruit and cheese on sticks, etc)....

another group did street safety (being careful when crossing streets (looking in both directions for cars), traffic lights, not talking to strangers--i think they did a skit on how a stranger tried to lure kids), bicycle safety (helmet, knee pads, etc).

hope these suggestions also help. best of luck to you!

I'm doing something simular for class. We are teaching pre-schoolers on something health/safety related. A few ideas my class came up with are staying away from poison/household chemicals, cover your cough and sneeze, street safety, fire safety, stranger danger, water safety, bike safety, gun safety, practice going to the doctor or dentist, teeth brushing, learning how and when to call 911.

The first thing I would do is identify the group of kids you are teaching. Knowing their ages, neighborhood, ethnic backround, and socio/economic class. One thing that they suggested is asking where you are teaching what their needs are. They may have a lot of kids with a particular disease that they want you to take down onto a kids level/.

Thank you everyone for your help. I really really appreciate it.

And to Casi, I hope you have a great turn out with your teaching project.

My clinical group is doing the nutrition/healthy foods thing for a 3rd grade class. We live in an area where diabetes is rampant (large hispanic population - around 90+ percent), and we're using food samples like carrots, fruit, ect, as the previous poster said.

Our instructor tried to convince us that nutrition teaching has been overdone in previous classes, but we finally got her to admit that it's still very much needed, especially in this age of fat kids, sitting in front of the tv all day. So, she approved our project.

For my peds assignment we did Fire Safety.. we took a big poster board and made it look like the dial pad of a phone and had each kid come up and press 911.. also made fake flames, which we stuck on kids and had them *Stop *Drop and *Roll (we made big signs for that and the kids shouted at the ones practicing what to do) and played a game with a sheet where they crawled under it (pretended it was smoke) and read them a fire book about a dragon called NO Dragons for Tea..

anyway whatever you do.. keep it simple and short.. because with 30 6 year olds.. nothing stays on track for long.. Good luck and have fun..

**Tip.. we had stickers and such to give the kids to keep them on target!**

I did one on brushing teeth and flossing. I had to teach 13 3 year olds. I went to my dentist and asked if they had any teaching tools they would be willing to let me borrow for the day (I have been a patient of theirs for eons and both my daughters have been going there since they were almost 2).

They gave me an enormous sized mouth with gums, teeth, and tongue and a huge toothbrush that went with it, along with stickers, magnets, coloring books and free floss and toothbrushes for all the kids. I went on line and found some print out pictures of teeth, that were basic enough for even a 3 yr old to color.

My clinical partner and I did a basic ? and answer thing with the kids, told about the bad things that could happen if you didn't brush your teeth enough and correctly etc. Then we did a little song/dance thing about brushing your teeth (a song that was the length of how long one should brush their teeth..2 minutes). Then we let the kids demonstrate how to brush teeth using the huge mouth and toothbrush.

The kids loved it. We got A's for it, and the preschool director asked me if I would consider doing it again for the other class of 3 year olds. I told my dentist and dential hygenist about it and they ordered me a set of mouth and toothbrush for myself and I go as an "embassador" every year 3 times a year to do it for the dentists office(the toothbrushes and floss have the dentists name on them, nothing like a little "free" advertising right). I've done it 5 times so far and each of the classes still enjoy it as much as the first.

Other classmates did handwashing, fire safety, stop drop and roll, stranger danger, good hygene (bathing, washing hair, teeth), bike safety, say no to drug type things...the possibilities are endless.

Good luck with the project. I actually dreaded it, but had a great time doig it once it happened.

I also forgot to add, hit up organizations and buisnesses for freebies. My group is doing household chemicals yuck and we're trying to get frliendly with poison control.
