Published

Hey everyone,

I know there has been many posts about PDAs but I am looking into buying one after all the good things I have heard about them from all of you. I just need help...I see that there are alot of different brands of PDAs. I want the newest one, but one I will get alot of use out of. I dont need a camera or a mp3 player but I do want to be able to download all the nurses programs that can help me through clinicals and everything. What woud best suite me?

I bought the Dell Axim X50v. It's a beauty. I love the WiFi on it as well as the MP3 so far! I'll let you know it works when school starts!!

What is PEPID? I know they have softwares for Nurses but what are we suppose to get if we decide that is what we want to use? I have heard of PEPID, and a couple more on here like skyscape. What are your personal advices on this? Im starting NS in January and im trying to get everything ready. How soon should I get my PDA before I start NS tog et used to it?

i have a pocket pc, hp ipaq 3115. it was pricy..350 dollars i think when it came down to it. It has 56 mb of memory with an expansion slot. i don't know much about it except the research i've done myself. i am finding that to have a good amount of main memory has been necessary despite the expansion slot. I bought a 1 gb memory chip for my nursing programs also (because there was a deal : ) ) I love my ipaq. it's been easy to learn and easy to understand and download programs. currently i have 5 min clinicians guide and davis drug guide on mine. personally i think any of the handhelds would be good, as long as they have an expansion slot for memory, a middle amount of main memory (not the highest or lowest)....i recommend buying a hardcover for it whatever you decide. i have a rhinoskin that has been a lifesaver for me as i have banged it against the corner of the nurses' station numerous times because i keep it in my pocket. i havent done so yet, but it also recommended that you buy screen protectors so it doesnt get scratched. I look on skyscape for my programs.....i had epocrates as a free download, but it gave me problems so i removed it....the number of programs is endless. i love having so much information at my fingertips!

I absolutely recommend the Treo 600 or 650. It is a smartphone and can add memory to it. Check it out. www.palmone.com

Best of Luck :)

Dell makes good products. Did they nickel and dime you with software and accessories that weren't included with the unit?

Natashaa, Thank you. I will check the ebay. Hope I get a good deal.

Maggie, Would I be able to download the drugs book and medical dictionary on Dell???

I know it's a luxury, but if I'm spending $$ on a treo 600 I need to justify the wireless internet access feature and voice/internet/data plans are over $60 a month. I guess my low cost wireless plan spoils me.

Hi Maggie,

I just bought an X50v as well..it should arrive tomorrow!! I probably won't use the WiFi much but I'm excited about the MP3 and the ability to use it as a recorder, as well as all the programs I'll be able to put on it. I'm hoping it will help me through school! Let me know how you like it once your classes start. I have to wait another month (funny how the whole time I was getting my other degree I just wanted school to be over with and now I can't wait for it to start..hehe).

Have you downloaded any of the programs like Pepid or Epocrates?

Daphne

Tungsten T5 by Palm is what I have (it's got tons of space!). I downloaded Epocrates Essentials and I'm very happy with it. PEPID is also good program. I also have Tabers Medical Dictionary, which I love; it makes looking stuff up soooo easy. I do recommend also getting a regular unabridged dictionary like Webster's. I use the free Epocrates calculators A LOT...like the kilograms to pounds and body mass index.

It's so much easier to carry my PDA around than to keep running to the breakroom to look stuff up. I'm soooo happy I got one!

Hi all, I purchased a Tungsten T5, and got mine for 249.00 after a fifty dollar rebate. Downloaded the rebate form from palmOne. Check out pricewatch.com for PDA's and accessories, they compare prices from all over, so you can choose the cheapest or what gives you the most bang for the buck.

I also recommend skyscape.com for medical software, I got a great package deal with rn notes, Davis' drug guide, a med. calculator, Nurses manual of lab and diagnotic test, and tons of other great features. I can update it daily to get all the newest info. as well as med alert updates, search for journal articels, just tons of stuff. The package I got was called the Nurse's Constellation and was around $89, or $111, with a 64MB expansion card.

I had one from costc can't remember the brand, Palm somthing. I ended up taking it back. I just never used it, it became a pain. If there was a drug I didn't know I looked it up in the Nursing drug book. The rest I just memorized. Maybe if I had one that was more convient to use and carry I would still have it.

I have an HP Ipaq and paid probably way too much for it but it sure is nice... I bought an extra memory card so I don't run out of space, even though it has quite a large memory itself. It can be used as a recorder abd I will buy another seperate memory card for that since that uses a lot of space.

I have on it, though I don't start clincals until January so I might not use all of these, Davis' Drug Guide, Tabers, RNotes, Archimedes and some others

http://www.skyscape.com will let you try most of them for free!!
