PBCC-palm beach comm. college

Published

Hi everyone,

I'm in the process of study for the nurse Procalc and the NLN entrance exam for PBCC fall nursing program.

I read on line that this school works on a point system

I was wondering if anyone who has been accepted to the program

(past/Present) student: HOW MANY POINTS DID YOU HAVE TO

WHEN ACCEPTED TO THE PROGRAM.

Anyone with info about the program, would be helpful.

Thanks

Does anyone know what volunteer work qualifies as medical experience?

What's the difference between NUR 1141 (Intro to Pharmacotherapeutics) NUR 2140 (Pharmacology for Nursing)?

I was told either can be taken for the RN pharmacology requirement...but 1141 is shown under "Semester 1" as a two credit course and 2140 is shown under "Cognates" as a three credit course.

I've tried emailing the instructors about this because I wanted to take pharm this summer, and 2140 is the only class with any openings. Still haven't gotten any response from them.:(

You can take either class for nursing. From what I've heard the 3 credit would probably transfer towards a BSN. If you do take 2140 over the summer be prepared to eat, sleep and breathe pharm for the next 6 wks. I just finished it and had my final on Monday. We lost half the class because of how hard it was. I wouldn't recommend taking it over the summer unless you have to. It is def. better to finish it before going into nursing.

Mummiluvsadrian,

Thank you for the kind words. When did you try to sign up for the test? I just went on and like you said there are no seats left. No seats in Pennsacola either. It also said that the pennsacola site is for PJC students only. Is new york the only place that we can retake it? I saw you got an 89...I got an 88 myself. Damn those 1 and 2 stinkin points...lol. What else are you going to do to get extra points? I havent taken the elements of nutrition but it is filled up for summer so if i take it in spring it wont count anyways. The only other point I can consider at this point is the work experience but I dont have any work experience unless I got a CNA certificate and did that for a bit. When was your baby born? My son is 7 and my daughter is 9 months old. I also considered going for LPN..and I am regretting not doing that to begin with but now after all these classes it would be like starting over except it knocks a year off of RN school with bridge program. Have you considered going to Belle Glade. I am considering that but I have heard it is pretty rough out there plus a long drive.:typing

Hey moondust...sorry it took so long for me to reply...I've decided to drive to North Carolina and take it there on August 22nd. I just hope that in the end its all worth it

JustinTJ..you are thee best!!! Thank you so much for all your suggestions =) I am definetely taking the NLN over in August and hopefulli i'll get that little extra point that would've made all the difference this semester =/ its ok im maintaining a positive attitude:D again thank you for all your good advice!!!!

Moondust...I volunteered as a receptionist at a doctors office and that gave me the extra point...I think its pretty much anywhere that has a medical environment...hospital, doctors office, nursing home, or even a pharmacy. Hope this helps :heartbeat

Maybe I'm a complete fool, but I just registered for it.:uhoh21:

I'm only working part time right now so I figure that should give me plenty of time to study...(?)

Like you said, it's probably better to get it done before starting in the fall, so might as well seize the opportunity.

You'll be fine, just really listen to her lectures. To get a jump start I would start reading the first 12 chapters because that is what your first test will be on. You have a test every week. Just try to keep yourself motivated to study. I started to fizzle out towards the end, I was getting burnt out. Good luck

So I'm taking Pharm this summer as well. Will we have to bring the books (Med Dictionary + Drug guide) to class for Case Studies or any other day? She never explained if it would be in class or part of the homework.. or maybe that was during the first half of the class which I didn't get to record.

You don't need them for class. I actually only opened the drug guide for the case studies. Never used the med dict. Also, don't stress over quizes and homework, focus on the tests. Nobody in my class did good on the quizes. She mostly just uses them to make sure you are in class and for class paricipation. Good luck, it goes by fast.

Justin - You mentioned you preferred online lecture. I am fond of online classes. However, I am a little skeptical just starting out. Do you think online is ok for a 1st Semester Nursing Student? And how about tests, are they taken in Lake Worth or at home?

Any advise is much appreciated...

It depends on the person. If you can stay on task and learn on your own, with their powerpoints and notes, then go for it. Most of the test material comes directly from their lectures instead of reading the book. I read the book only to supplement the material I had concerns with.

If I had to do it over again, I'd do first online, but it depends on your learning style. Some people need to be in class, some can do it on their own. They really do a lot of powerpoint reading during lecture. I'd rather read it on my couch.
