Hi,
I was just wondering if this happened to anyone else- I took nclex-pn on tuesday, and according to the BON web site, my license was issued this morning :) Now the sad thing is, the DON at my work (i am, i mean, was, a CNA at a nursing home) called me yesterday and informed me that since I passed my boards, I can no longer work there as an aide, and they have no open LPN positions- so I was told "come in and hand in your batch, because you're done". Just like that. I don't even have my license in my hands yet. I was scheduled to work today thru Sunday, so because I passed my boards, I am essentially losing over $400. Has this happened to anyone else- getting laid off with NO notice whatsoever, just because you passed a test....?
Thanks,
an unemployed nurse.

Well, that is the sort of thing you'd think most places would discuss with you in advance -- but lots of employers won't let you continue in a "lower" level position once you're licensed as something else. Had you discussed this (your NCLEX plans and your future at that employer) with your DON in advance? Best wishes for finding a new position quickly! :)

I find that interesting because my state allows you to get a CNA license without testing as long as you have your RN or LPN. In other words, if you want to work as a CNA you are automatically qualified to obtain the license. Getting your LPN or RN doesn't make you uncertified as a CNA. That is really strange. But I guess its that particular hospitals policy.
Anyhow, I'm sorry that is happening!

Sorry about your dilemma. That is really weird. I have a friend who worked as a CNA,and after passing her RN-Nclex they wouldn't give her work as a RN but instead tried to capitalize on her being an RN working as a CNA. I thought as long as you work within the role it was okay. Ex: CNA you are only doing skills within that role per state etc......On the upside when one door closes another opens. Keep your head up !!! Are you eligible for any unused time from your job ? Seems like you should be able to receive unemployment until you find work....Happy New Years and :ancong!: on your pass ! ! !

Wow....I would think that they would want to keep you around and MAKE a position for you. My employer started cutting back my hours more and more the closer I got to graduation. In the last month of school, I only worked about three days. I work in an animal hospital, though.....and they knew I was leaving eventually, of course. There are no RN positions at the animal hospital. :)

First, allow me to say Congratulations on passing your boards...I am sure that this termination sort of overshadowed your success because regardless of what, you have to eat today. I do also wonder if you shared with your job that you took NCLEX, because I'd be curious to know if they checked on a whim or a hint?
The bottom unfortunate line is that even if you continued as an aide, you would be held accountable to your higher license, and this could have been the reason why your facility let you go. If you have a good relationship with your DON or another higher-upper, you could ask. Also, I would definitely ask for a letter of reference, since, now, you need a job. Wishing you the very best!

At the hospital where I volunteered, techs and PCAs who passed the NCLEX were fired as soon as HR found out. They could apply for a nursing position, but it was not guaranteed.

Hey,
That sort of thing happened to me. I worked as a PCT in the CCU. I informed my boss when I was taking the NCLEX and approximately when I would be finding out the results. I already had an RN job lined up, so we both decided that I would work through the end of January as a PCT. Well, I took the NCLEX and passed,(thank GOD!). It took my state's licensing board about a week to post my license number. Soon as my license number was posted on the website my boss and HR realized they either had to pay me new grad salary, or give me an early vacation. I'm pretty sure you know what they decided. My boss said he didn't have it in his budget to pay me the new grad salary...so I got 10 days vacation. Fortunately, I have my new job lined up to start Feb 1st.
This whole situation stinks, but I wish you the best in finding a new job! At least you have a little patient care experience you can put on your resume. Definitely a step ahead of a lot of new grads. Good luck!

I think it was a rotten thing to do to you. An appropriate action would have been to inform you when it became known that you would be taking the boards. At least in that case you would have had notice to start looking elsewhere for a job. I dare say she probably did not have the decency to congratulate you for passing the boards. Well....here we know what an accomplishment that was, and we don't want you to feel less.....so, Congratulations!

I'm so sorry this happened to you, I think your employer should have discussed this with before hand. On the other hand Congrats on passing the boards, that is a great accomplishment! Keep your chin up, everything happens for a reason. You should be able to collect unemployment since you were laid off. Good luck with the new job search!
