Part time plus per diem?

Hi all. I'm wondering if it's ever done to get a part time hospital job and supplement work with per diem shifts. Anyone have any input on if this is a good idea or not? Also, is it a problem to work part time and per diem in the same hospital? Thank you!

What would be the point of this? What are you trying to accomplish?

Per Diem is a type of part time employment. I've never heard of an employee being Per Diem and part time in title. That wouldn't make any sense.

It doesn't make sense to me. What do you want, more hours but not having to be obligated to those shifts?

If you like working part-time but are open to occasional extra shifts that is very doable.

I'm looking for a day shift position and am having trouble finding a full time position on the unit I'm interested in. I found a potential part time position, but two shifts a week is too few. So I was thinking about supplementing that with a per diem job elsewhere. I would do two per diem jobs but I need the benefits.

It is not legal for someone employed as part time with benefits on the hospital payroll , to be paid also as a perdiem, you are supposed to be paid as OT,you are not a 1099 and a 1040 in the same hospital.It used to be done many many years ago to circumvent paying OT rates of time and a half.Nurses were paid by separate check,but the IRS caught up with this.

You can work per diem at a different facility if that's what you mean?

I am part time and Per Diem elsewhere. I also pick up extra shifts at my primary job. It works out great, I can gear down to 2 days a week at any time.

People hold part time plus per diem jobs all the time but I would say more often than not it's with 2 different employers.

When I left my hospital job, I worked 30 hrs/week at a home health agency and 16 hrs/week (technically a per diem position) at a boarding school.

Another unit may not be willing to give you per diem hours if you are already a permanent employee elsewhere within the hospital because they'd still need to pay you OT for any hours worked over 40.

I currently have a full-time position at my hospital and an on-call position in another unit; the on call is minimum 24 hrs per month and doesn't interfere with my full time hours. I also have a minimum 24-hrs per diem position at another hospital.

it's doable-as long as there is not over lapping with schedules and the flexibility is there.

I've known people who have done it. They work part time on one unit -- and look to pick up extra shifts sometimes on that same unit. But sometimes, they pick up shifts on another unit, where they have worked previously. It might be difficult to arrange if you are unknown to the employer though.

You might want to take the part time job, and then see if you can pick up extra shifts on that same. Most units would be happy to hire someone who could pick up extra when needed.
