Has anyone heard back from labor & delivery yet?

I received an email to sign up for an interview this past week. They are going to be in person starting next week (if you’re located in Dallas) so I don’t think they will make any decisions for a couple of weeks. I declined as I’ve accepted a position in my #1 unit. Good luck! Hope y’all hear something soon.

Did you have previous healthcare experience in L&D? Like working as a tech or your preceptorship.

I actually don’t have any experience in L&D but I did have a fair bit of my clinicals at Parkland!

Hey there- Hoping you have some insight for me! I have residency offers from Parkland in the ED and UTSW in acute surgical and I don't know which one to accept. I haven't had clinical at either location. Any insight into working at either hospital or know people who have been through the residency program? They both seem great, my heart is in ED but I really liked the managers at UTSW.

I personally would have chosen utsw, it's the second best hospital in TX, it's a state hospital so better benefit and does it have 2 year contract? I don't think it does. Parkland has a 2-yr contract I think.

I’m currently a PCT at UTSW. They have the best pay for techs and since it’s a state hospital insurance is free and 100% paid by the company. I’ve worked at another level 1 hospital in Dallas and I must say my managers at UTSW are the best I’ve ever had.  Friendly, understanding, flexible. Always willing to work with you. I’ll miss them not sure if I’ll ever find that again. I guess it depends on what specialty you want to start in. Not a fan of med Surg personally. ICU has always had my heart but if I had to work med Surg I would want it to be at utsw. Hope this helps.

Thanks y'all, that is helpful. This is why it's such a struggle, the managers at UTSW were so great, I can tell I would learn so much but I did NOT want med surg. I said I'd never work in med surg after that rotation, LOL. Parkland has been so disorganized, I haven't gotten replies from the recruiter or the managers to emails sent. I worry this is a bad sign. And yes, Parkland has a two year contract. There is no contract and better benefits and pay for UTSW. But I love the ED.

Hey there, I completely understand the struggle you are having trying to decide between hospital quality vs specialty of passion and honestly it boils down to which one you want most. I personally have had loads of clinicals (OB and critical care) at Parkland and absolutely love the culture there, everybody is so friendly and willing to help you even if you are a stranger. They have amazing retentions, many of the staff I met have been there for years, even decades, and Parkland takes a lot of time teaching their new nurses (they are known to be a teaching facility) so they invest much training and knowledge and resources into you from multiple people I have heard from who finished their residencies there. The lead and sole new grad recruiter whom you email questions to undertakes many emails at once so I would just email her again expressing your concerns. She has been very good with me responding within 1-2 days. It really seems like your heart is in ED so I would take it! You will learn so much from the diverse patient population that Parkland has to offer. Why succumb yourself to a specialty that you have no passion in? Those two years will fly by and if you really want out of Parkland, you could always take your 2 years of experience in ED and apply to UTSW in the future. Hope this helps!

Thank you for helping me work through this!! That really does help. I'm so glad you had a good experience at Parkland for your clinicals. It was a great interview and I think it will be a good fit for me. That is a good point, I can always change hospitals after residency.

I think if ED is what you love you’d be doing yourself a huge disservice by starting on Med Surg just because of the hospital. I’ve heard good and bad things about Parkland but one thing I know for sure is they WILL teach you how to be an ED nurse. It is fast paced and chaotic down there but you’ll be able to go to any hospital in the country off the name alone. There was a time when new grads had to start on Med Surg but that’s not the case anymore. We are lucky to be able to start in the specialties of our choice now. Good luck on your decision!

BabyNurse101 did you take the NICU job at Parkland or the Baylor job?

Yes! I agree, you can't go wrong with Parkland on your resume. This was my top choice, I think I need to go with my gut.

Yes, I ended up accepting the NICU job at Parkland because it was my #1 unit and too good of an opportunity to pass on given how competitive it is. I see you are from UTA? I am also from UTA so if you end up going to Parkland and wanna connect together as new grads just lemme know!
