Parent tips to send home when kids are watching bad stuff on the internet.

Published

Good morning Friends. I was just asked from one of my administrators for help in finding a tips/info sheet to send home to parents. Apparently, some of our upper elem. aged students are talking about inappropriate subjects that they have seen on the internet. I know this is sadly, no news flash, to most of us. Especially with all the tablets and smartphones that are available at every breath. Do any of you have a good quick resource that you can direct me to?

Thanks Friends!

Just tell him to keep his damn hands to himself!

I agree - no need to make a federal case out of this or label said kids as a sexual predator in need of psychiatric treatment. Just a strong message about keeping hands to himself with firm consequences is all that's needed at this point.

The "keep your hand to yourself" is the talk that the little mr. is getting.

The admin. just wanted to use this as an opportunity to provide some education about what is appropriate and what isn't. Remember, this is the 1 school that I go to that does not have a school counselor. So, some of the things that seem routine, and have already been routinely covered. Have not been because of not having a counselor.

Add to that, this is her first year as an admin. and she is very young. I appreciate her trust and confidence in me to ask for my guidance.

I will start out by saying that I am pretty conservative and a pretty strict parent. Still who decides what is inappropriate? After-all it wasn't so long ago the inter-racial relationships and LGBT subject matter was considered very inappropriate fro young viewers. I find the antics of the Kardasian's highly inappropriate and damaging to young children and adolescents and don't even get me started on the Real Non-housewives -of wherever". Mass market is selling Daisy duke shorts and crop (Bare midriff) tops to 6 year olds. My parents though Road Runner/ Tom and Jerry Cartoons were to violent.

The internet has made thing so much more complicated but one only has to invest in a good firewall to keep out selected content. Still the one we have had to be unblocked during my son's anatomy lessons because it would not allow access to sites that mentioned breasts, memberes, or orificees.

You can't moralize children from growing up in the Brave New World we adults have created. You can only be there to guide them through it.

I teach sex ed to grades 7, 8, and 10, which most people on this board know about (parents know I do and I have gotten a lot of support). I am used to finding out kids watch inappropriate things. My anonymous question box has several questions in it that indicate kids know about / likely are watching internet Media. Times have changed since the internet - even simple searches can turn up Media. And the information they do read / watch can often be so inaccurate.

Luckily, we have a cell phone ban for students and pretty strict internet filters for computer use in school. But I have no idea what is in place in every home.

Yes, one person's inappropriate is different from another's. But touching another person's butt without their permission? Consent and I preach it in class with hopes that that situation can be avoided. Better to learn it now when it can be learned vs. later when the consequences are fierce.

All being said, I help teach it to prevent it, but the deans and counselor get involved if it happens.

Again, why I pay monthly for a filter. It doesn't even allow Instagram, no internal filters on Instagram and fully open, or YouTube (you can request a bypass). Too many parents out there think that kids are just little adults:no: Agree that education is the best defense. Wish we could at least broach the subject here, have numerous 8th graders who are constantly talking about it.

We still spy on The Kid's Insta, and he's 17. The girls just put it all out there with their bods, and the boys take stupid "red solo cup" pics.

Yes, by all means, let's take a picture of EVERYTHING!

Dumb kids.

All devices that access internet have parental controls. Perhaps parents should consider their use PRN, because asking a kid not to access age inappropriate sites just isn't typically effective. Kids will be kids, and require adult guidance and supervision. At least mine did.

Right. We are all saying that. However, is it the school nurse's job to do for the students? We can support. We really shouldn't be implementing.

An issue with guidance counselors, or do you not have any?
