Let's talk about other nurses being abusive against other nurses. Degrading them and telling them they have psychiatric disorders. Attempting to diagnose them with "bipolar" disorder. Knowing that this nurse does suffer with depression, taking advantage of that and calling them crazy and degrading them with every chance. Using them. Treating them like a yo-yo. Degrading their appearance, their actions, and their character. Yeah these nurses exist, and they are among us. Some of them even HERE on all Allnurses. I can name a few, but won't.

Let's end nurse on nurse abuse.

Yep. 'Twould seem the OP indeed likes to stir the pot. To me, it alludes a questionable motive and sincerity.

I must have worked in the most boring hospitals and clinics in my 34 years of nursing. I have no bully stories to share! I don't have any NETY stories to share!

There was an Internet site I joined and I did feel disrespected so simply left the group. Maybe it is how we define bullying?

Maybe this happens more in poorly staffed, poorly managed, skilled nursing facilities? That is such a poorly paid, high stress, difficult area of nursing. I can kind of imagine it happening there, but my opinion is not based on any actual experience.

No, you haven't worked in the MOST boring -- I have only encountered two bullies in 40 years. I've a few stories to share of communications failures that defy explanation, but just because I've had a negative experience with someone (or witnessed one) doesn't mean that anyone is a bully or "eating" anyone. And I have just as many stories of elders being eaten as I have of elders eating newbies. More, actually.

I've encountered real bullying on the internet -- the kind where someone posts your real life address and threatens to come to your door and set their attack dogs on you -- I haven't seen anything as awful as that on allnurses.com.

This thread is a good example of negative attention seeking behavior. If you make a habit of it people will not take kindly and you may open yourself up to ridicule.

If this has happened to you in the past you might examine how are you are conducting yourself.

I am not even going to dignify the rest of your post denigrating Diploma and ADN

nurses. (some of whom are outstanding nurses in their own right and do not deserve the shabby treatment they get in todays BSN driven workforce). But your comment about leaving your mental health issues at the door shows a fundamental lack of understanding about the nature of mental illness. One doesn't have to be mentally ill to be a mean despicable person. In my experience being on this planet 54 years I find that the percentage of mean nurses roughly parallels the percentage of mean people in society in general.

I believe that the 14.5 million or 18.2 % of the population in the United States who suffer from mental illness would really love to be able to simply set their burden down and walk away from it. I know I wish on a daily basis that I didn't have to deal with Major depression, anxiety and PTSD that has played an integral part in the person I am. Yes at times I snap a people and I guess you could even say I'm mean sometimes but I work really hard not be. When the only thing you remember about your formative years is violence, terror and pain. You can't just put it down and walk away. What I find is that most truly mean people can't use the excuse of mental illness to excuse their character flaws, because mental illness is not a character flaw. These are treatable diseases that require lifetime maintenance in the same fashion as diabetes and certain other conditions.

I believe the OP used the wrong tack here as he/she is clearly speaking of a specific member of this forum and generalizing about nurses in general. This is something I see all to much of in the discussion of bullying in nursing. We have learned as a society to use sweeping bashing statements to identify groups of people we don't like i.e.... "All conservatives are racists, All priests are pedophiles, all liberals are unrealistic, all old nurses with high expectations are bullies, etc.... that we don't look at the real problems. If everyone quit bemoaning all these issues and just focused on fixing their own small corner of the world it would soon become a better place.

I am not perfect and I don't try to be, I get snarky sometimes and will apologize when called on it. It's all a part of being human.

I have one thing to add for the enlightenment of those who believe that "older" nurses have diplomas and can't keep up with current technology. I have a BS and masters in nursing and have worked in critical care (ICU, CVICU, Open heart for the past 38 years.) A stick in the mud? Nope. I'm as current with the latest technology as any younger nurse. All the technological advances that we as nurses use every day have been developed over the years of my practice as a nurse, and that would include even computer charting which I have been doing for about 25 years. And BTW, the very best nurses I have ever worked with are diploma nurses. As to bullying, I have never been a victim of it nor have I witnessed it.

Ok I think this thread has gone as far as it can. Words typed can be taken the wrong way. If it is a personal attack and on this site then please report them and let staff review. Words can often be seen as rude but does not mean that it is against the Terms of Service of the site. Sometimes you have to sit back and think about what has been already posted.
