I recently saw a job opportunity that really.... really piqued my interest but they are asking specifically for combined ED/SICU/Surg-step-down experience.
I mean why can't they just ask for ED-trauma experience with certs or SICU experience???
Heck I'm an awesome ED/trauma nurse, I haven't worked SICU or surg-step down but I've seen a plethora of floor and ICU surgical cases and level 1 trauma cases too!
I just hate when I see a job posted that I know I can tackle but it says....
fill in the blank experience required!
Plenty of nurses have experience that can translate into a variety of specialties.... give us the opportunity & let us shine!!!

Unfortunately, since the economy tanked, it's been v. much an employer's market, and they can be as picky and particular as they want (and they know it :)).

And funny how when they need a nurse to float, any background or experience will do!

Is it possible to apply and see if they are interested anyway? I'm always optimistic that I can charm a person haha. HR will look over the app and resume and see if it's worth forwarding to a manager. What's the worse that could happen?

Nowadays, at least in larger hospitals/healthcare systems, HR doesn't "look over the app" -- the reason they accept only online applications is that they have a software program that does the initial review of all applications, searching the applications and resume's for specific keywords related to the experience required for the particular job. If the computer doesn't find what it's looking for on your application (some reference to having the experience required for the specific job), it never makes it to a live person ...

When you see a very specific job ad, it usually means there is a candidate in mind for that job and the hiring manager wants to limit the number of candidates. Very common practice in the corporate world, did it many times myself. We used to call them "wired" job ads.

I would rather see this kind of disclaimer on a job listing than the ones where they make bold statements about which ethnicities are acceptable or not acceptable for applicants.

I personally have gotten jobs that stated "X" experience REQUIRED. I still applied for them anyway.
I am currently doing HEDIS and I have never done it before. HEDIS exp was required on a job ad...
Go for anything that piques your interest :) You never know...

I'm currently in a job for which the advertisement listed a requirement of 3 to 5 years of experience, which I didn't have. I applied anyway, and here I am. I did have other experience/education that they took into consideration. So, I'd apply...you never know.
