Online Science Courses

Published

Hi all,

I thought that maybe it would be good to have a sticky for online science courses.

I am currently looking for an online/distance learning-- 4-- credit microbiology course. Of course it has to have a lab.

I know that both ccconline and Rio Salado offer these courses. Anyone have experience with either one of these in regards to microbiology, i.e. testing, level of difficulty, user friendly technology. I know from experience with Rio that the exams are proctored but how does ccconline deliver their exams?

If you have a link or resources to other colleges offering sciences--please post them here.

Thanks!

Hi MSJ083, Do you still remember what the BYU Microbio class was like? What to focus on? How to prepare for the exams? Thank you!

I am debating between BYU and CCConline for a microbiology course. Does anyone have a suggestion?

hi, i saw your post on allnurses about the chem151-152 with dr. klepper at iowacconline. do you mind sharing how this course was for you? i know it was a while ago that you took it, but i am actually trying to repeat my chemistry classes to apply for grad school for nursing. (i took chem classes years ago, and only got c's in them.) also, if they will let me i'm going to try to take 151 (inorganic) and 152 (organic) at the same time this summer, so that i can finish them in time for the application to grad school in october. are the classes extrememely difficult to the point that they shouldn't be taken simultaneously?

thanks

hi there, i did not take chem with dr. klepper. perhaps the person (Fats) that wrote before me did. sorry! best of luck...

I have taken two chemistry with Dr. Klepper, also the ccconline microbiology class. Recommend both of them. For Dr. Kleppers class, you have online quizzes each week (read the chapters), computer labs and at home labs each week. You have to write a small report for each lab. I just figured out my layout for the reports and used the same one each week for each of the types of labs. I think there are mid and final exams that are timed but they are still open book. Chemistry is a lot of algebra, at least in the beginning classes. So make sure you understand stuff when you read and then you won't time out on the quizzes. When I took it a few years ago there were no graded homework assignments. The good thing about this is that I was able to use a much older version of the textbook, which I bought for about $5 on amazon and passed with an A. The older version still has the same info so as long as there are still no graded homework from the book, you could still do that. Enroll and wait for syllabus before buying the book (you can get through the first week or two looking up stuff on the internet if need be.

For the micro class, I borrowed a microscope but it wasn't as good as it should have been. Wished it was better because that stuff if interesting. You have to buy a kit that has the stuff for doing the labs, petrie dishes wtih cultures and stuff like that. It was fun. There were online quizes and tests also, no proctored stuff. again, if you read the material, take all quizes and do all labs with good reports, you will get a good grade.

Only issue is that some schools won't take online lab classes. From my vast experience of researching it seems that the higher the degree, the more likely they will take the online labs or don't even require labs. Most cc , except pthose that actually offer the online science classes, like iowa, colorado etc., will not accept the online science classes. Most traditional BSN will not either. Most Accelerated BSN will. Most direct entry MSN will also.

Yes I took them all online with Edukan which I picked Colby Community College as my school through there its in KS... I think the website is Edukan.org... They have somewhat of lab.. the AP course has a very good interactive lab on a CD that you look at the bones and parts of the body and it has a worksheet booklet that you will have to answer the questions to .. and Micro has a GREAT lab online with a cd as well and you experiment with all the chemicals I LOVE THIS CLASS then you had to go into a lab on campus ( it can be a campus by you just have to talk to an teacher or student teacher) its took me a like 3 hours in one day to look over materials with a lab teacher and do one lab that the teacher ask of you... then you mail it to the teacher.. its an outline of your performance and what you know.. its very easy...

As for the test THEY ARE VERY EASY IF YOU STUDY for AP look over the book, notes from teacher and cd from back of book (the test on there are some of the same) .. Mirco is easy.. they are all online you make sure u have your notes, book and outline of chapter in front of you... pay attention to the questions you can find all of them in your book and def your notes .. and you might what to get a study buddy in the classes .. let me know if you have any more questions

Your welcome

Chrissy

Hi Chrissy,

I just noticed that you took the microbio course through edukan and I'm currently looking for both a microbio and an ethics course and was hoping you could help me with a few questions! Particularly what professors you took your classes with. I'm going to be in my second semester of nursing school this summer and its a full on credit load ( 18 credits I believe) so I'm looking to take the course that is the least burdensome to add to this semester. i figured since you've already taken it then you would be the best person to ask :) :) Thanks so much!

Hi CAtoDC! I received a message from you regarding the Microbio course at bYU and I'm sorry to not have responded. I can't seem to send or respond to private messages for some reason because it says I may have gone over my quota.. but it still wont work now that I've deleted my inbox and outbox. Either way! I noticed your screen name and figured perhaps you'd get this... I didn't register for hte BYU microbio because it doesn't include a lab and its 3 credits- both which my program will not accept. So I'm currently looking at Edukan.org to see if that will work. Have you begun yours yet?

Hi all, I trying to get in to LPN-BSN program @ University of Oklahoma in Jan 2010. I have to have 4 prereqs first, though: dev psych, nutrition, microbiology (does that have any prereq?), and statistics. I was looking at the ccconline and wonder about the home school issue. What exactly does having to have a home school mean? Any suggestions on easiest/cheapest route? Trying to get these 4 prereqs are killin me!!!

Specializes in Neurology.

I took Psychology, A&P 1 and 2, Micro, Nutrition, and Develop Psych online at Cleveland Community College in Shelby, NC. For NC residents, it is $42 per semester hour. I took my Statistics class online at NC State (Raleigh). It cost about $400 for instate distance education tuition. Hope that helps someone! I am applying to Carolina for the Jan. 2010 ABSN program.

New here, and I'm trying to find a pathophysiology class to take this summer.

I don't suppose anybody knows if Salisbury University in Maryland will accept the patho offered at CCCOnline do you? They said they'd take the patho at Canyon College as long as it was accreditated, which CC is not (not that I can take classes there anyway since I'm in Idaho).

The best way to find out if a school will take a transfer course is to ask them for a form for pre transfer evaluation. Just fill it out with the class that you want to take and from which school - turn it back in and they will evaluate it and return with an approval or denial. If they approve it save the paper because they cannot deny it once you take the course - they have to accept it. Most schools do this.
