Online Science Courses

Nursing Students Online Learning

Published

Hi all,

I thought that maybe it would be good to have a sticky for online science courses.

I am currently looking for an online/distance learning-- 4-- credit microbiology course. Of course it has to have a lab.

I know that both ccconline and Rio Salado offer these courses. Anyone have experience with either one of these in regards to microbiology, i.e. testing, level of difficulty, user friendly technology. I know from experience with Rio that the exams are proctored but how does ccconline deliver their exams?

If you have a link or resources to other colleges offering sciences--please post them here.

i am looking a edukan seriously. does it list edukan college on the transcript? isn;t it a group of jr colleges? what name is on the transcript please?

I know this thread is about science classes but I need statistics class for my MSN class and was wondering if anyone had taken anything online?

I just finished up Stats at Rio Salado college. I am no math genious by far and managed to escape with a C. My instructor was helpful when I asked. One thing that I don't particularly like is that there is no interaction with other students.

Here is the link: http://www.riosalado.edu/

Thank you for the info on rio salado college. Unfortunatly I am looking for an upper division stats class.

Just thought it might be helpful to someone since I've been researching numerous distance learning class options. I've compiled a list of tuition costs. Keep in mind that most of these science classes are 3 or 4 credit hours.

Course Costs:

Rio Salada: $159/per credit hour ($477/per 3 units course)

Edukan: $115/per credit hour ($345/per 3 unit course)

BYU: $390/per 3 unit course on average (broken down is about $130/per credit hour)

CCCOnline: $222.40/per credit hour (Holy smokes! That's $667.20 for a 3 unit course)

I know there are more out there, but these are the ones I wrote down as I was searching. Hope these are helpful to some of you.

Just wanted to share some of my experience with Rio Salado with you guys.

I've just finished taking BIO156 (Introductory biology for allied health) as a refresher/pre-req for A&P. It was amazing. By far the best instructor I have ever had, online or offline for any subject. He was very demanding, assigning essays, labs and quizes every week, but it was absolutely worth it.

I also finished HCC145AA, which is Medical Terminology. I wasn't too excited about this instructor. All she did was put online some notes on the test and a list with words we needed to know for the exam. She gave us a quiz and a case study every two weeks. It was an easy class, so I can't really blame her for not putting in a lot of effort.

Then I'm also taking MAT142, Applied College Math, right now. The instructor is not as actively involved as the one for biology. However, this math class is about the most interesting I've ever had. It actually is all about applying what you already know about math. Again, there is a quiz due every other week. And there are TONS of exercises available on MathLab.

Starting A&P in two weeks!

This is another great feature about Rio Salado, there classes start every two weeks!! I started my pre-reqs last May and I will have all of them finished by May. Which is a LOT faster than would be possible through the old-fashioned way.

When you're an Arizona resident, Rio Salado offers the same tuition rates as the other community college within the Maricopa Community Colleges, this is $65/credit hour.

They also have testing centers all over the Valley, so no matter where you live in the Phoenix metro area, they WILL have a center near you!

As you might be able to tell, I absolutely love it! :D

Edukan: $115/per credit hour ($345/per 3 unit course) Great courses. please note Micro is a hybrid course (you need to get to a lab). Loved Intro to Soc, A&P, Ethics

BYU: $390/per 3 unit course on average (broken down is about $130/per credit hour) You get 1 yr to take the course. Micro is only a 3hr class

CCCOnline: $222.40/per credit hour (Holy smokes! That's $667.20 for a 3 unit course) A bit pricy for non CO residents ($993 for 4hr class) but micro is all online

Good luck on your search

Hello All,

I have taken more than ten online classes through Rio Salado, including A&P I and II and Microbiology. I love my online classes....HOWEVER...nothing I had done prior prepared me for the horror that was microbiology online.

If you have any experience or background in micro, the online course will probably be easy for you. I would never recommend this class online to anyone who did not already have basic micro knowledge.

The "lab" for micro is simply submitting papers, you do not have the oportunity to grow specimens or even see examples in person.

I was just wondering how many weeks are the A&P classes at CCC? many thanks

its about a semester long but they also has a class that goes from Oct to Dec.. and summer classes it a great class online .. try to get Dr. Simmons he is a really good teacher... any other questions just email me.. i have taken AP one and two, art class, Micro and some classes online so I can help.....
