online schools cheapen our profession?

Published

I hold one post graduate degree working on a second and two Baccalaureate degrees. Yes, I like school a whole lot. I have taken online courses but find them to be relatively easy compared to in-school classes. When I earned my BSN from my RN the ease of earning the degree was simple. The coreqs were difficult when compared to the nursing classes. The Masters was even easier then the "upgrade" to my BSN.

I have had a few friends earn "pay for" online degrees. I assisted them on many occasions with their studies over the last few years. I found the online classes to be even simpler then the in school classes. My point of all this is I think with the abundance of online nursing schools it down grades our professions educational system.

THis is based on the supply and demand model. Meaning more schools same customer base means lower standards. If they did not lower standards then they would have "empty seats" in their "classes rooms." It seems with the eruption of online classess these company's that "chase" the LPN, RN and BSN perpared students do it for the money.

Well this is all well and good for the company that is making the $$$$$ but not for our profession. Look at PT, Pharm D, MD and DO schools they are there to make money but they limit the number. MD and DO schools make up about 140 school in the USA. Just how many nursing schools are they in the New York and California let alone the the other 48 states.

There are many reasons for the limited supply of the above professionals. But if any one has a copy of todays WALL STREET JOURNAL the bottom right under the "Inside Today's Journal" section look at the Home Improvement Made Easier. The contractors are now offering discounts because the "hot" market is cooling. In other words there is more supply (contractors) then demand. So what do they do lower their standards meaning how much $$$$ they will take to do the job.

This I can compare to many things but to remain on topic all the online schools and their continued rise to recruit new LPN's, RN's and BSN's. Standards must go down.......................................

What do you think?

Yes- I think if one is to be a really good troll around here, it might be necessary to change it up a bit. Maybe try something a little different instead of the DL threads, the overweight nurses threads, and the old-hat favorite ASN vs BSN threads. The pattern is getting too predictable, and is very much lacking in creativity, dontcha think?

It would be interesting to know what the attrition rates are in these online programs....esp the lpn to rn.

I work with a LPN that was in the online LPN to RN program thru Regis. This was about a year ago. I asked her what she thought of it, and she said "oh, it is easy." She is also working full time, and a single mother. I thought to myself, "RN school easy?....not in my opinion." All i know is she didn't finish it....not exactly sure why but my guess is that, with her attitude of it being "easy" she probably didn't prepare very well and didn't pass.

Not to mention, each credit hour at Regis costs like $200-$300 - much more than you pay at a comparable CC. i would hate to know what type of money she 'poured down the drain.'

Many, many people start but don't finish, or take a long time to finish, distance programs because the lack of structure makes it hard to stay motivated.

I know many more people who started distance programs at one time than people who actually completed them.

All I know is that I once looked at Uof Phoenix for my BSN but their tuition is insane! I would have had to take out a big loan to pay for that program.

I'm not sure why you guys are obsessed with trolls. Even if there were people allegedly "trolling" this thread, they haven't done so for weeks, and the thread would be dead by now. Yet, because you're so concerned with alleged "trolls" who aren't even posting anymore ... this thread is still alive.

If the object of this thread was to troll ... then, ironically, you guys are doing a great job for them by keeping the thread alive.

Just an observation ....

Girl- No you didn't say something about being obsessed...:chuckle:

You're over here in the Distance Learning threads more than those of us who are actually distance learners...LOL

Not that I won't be one of the first ones to cheer you on when you finish your traditional program, but I figured as long as we're making observations...:p

Well ... let's see ... other than today, I haven't posted anything for three weeks. So ... hopefully not too obsessed.;)

Besides, I'm tired of the EC debate (finally). Yes ... EC is the greatest, most wonderful nursing program every invented on the face of the planet. How about that !!! :chuckle

I just think it's funny when people complain about trolls and such when the alleged trolls aren't even around anymore.

Oops- OK, I emptied it. Thanks!

where i live you do all classroom stuff online and actually attend clinicals. I think this is a great opportunity for those that have difficulty sitting in a classroom all day. Im 34 and going back to school with 3 kids in tow. Im in a traditional classroom now but am looking into advancing via internet. alot of kids that are home schooled have actual teachers they corespond with. it depends on the school. i agree some are online technical centers where you dont even talk ever to an actual person. i guess just do research before you sign on to any school sherri

So, I am new here and was wondering what a "troll" is? (I don't want to get things heated though, just wondering)

A troll is someone who comes to an online forum and posts comments with the intent of getting people riled up. In general, when someone comes to a distance learning forum, where most all the people there are distance learners, and makes comments about how easy distance learning is, they are either A. wanting to make a jab at people who choose to use distance education or B. make a statement they know will annoy some distance learners and stand back to watch the fireworks they created. I also suspect that some trollers will post under different names to make it seem there are people with similar ideas, just to keep the fires going.
