UBC BSN September 2017

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi Everyone!

I've been searching for a thread for applicants to UBC's BScN program for September 2017, but I haven't found one. Please feel free to point me in the direction of an existing thread, or add to this one! I'm applying to UBC, U of T, and UWO for September, but UBC is definitely my first choice. Looking forward to hearing from everyone!

:)

Yeah, it was such a reaffirming step for me, so I hope you enjoy it as much! My best advice would be to give yourself ample time to work on the supplemental application and have as many people you respect review it. It was good for me to have to read it over, as it kept bringing up things for me that I was happy to have included at the end of the process. The supplemental application is quite long, so give yourself at least a month to do it all. Another tip is to read the Nursing Code of Ethics before doing the Casper test. It won't give you the answers since there are none, but it'll bring to light the ethical dilemmas nurses face and was useful for me in preparing not only for the test but for my future career. Best of luck to you!!!

Woah thank you so much for this advice!! And good luck in the nursing program :)

Congratulations to those of you who got accepted! This was my first time applying and I was rejected, which I wasn't too surprised by as it is such a competitive program. I was a bit shocked by how low my supplemental was as I thought is was very strong (ranked a 3) and I honestly have no idea about what direction I should take to improve it for next year. I have lots of volunteer experience but none specifically medical related within the last 5 years - although that didn't seem to be an issue for some applicants? So other than lining up volunteer experience in a hospital setting (which my schedule now allows for), for those of you who have reapplied: do you have any tips on what you included on your supplemental that made it more competitive? Thank you so much for any input and congrats again!!

Hello everyone, how do you know how you were ranked on grades/supplemental/casper?

Hi Tenfour, I would suggest you speak with an admissions counselor in the fall they will give you hints - their email is in your rejection letter. There are lots of ways you can improve your supplemental, some really good tips have already been shared on previous parts of this thread. I suggest you read it in full. Additionally, feel free to pm me if you'd like. Since you're new to allnurses, I think you'll have to wait until you post 10 comments or so before this forum allows you to PM. FYI, this was my 2nd time applying and I didn't get in but did pretty well on my supplemental.

Hi nursingbc21,

Didn't you apply this year? I might be confused. For those of us who didn't get in, they gave us a breakdown of how we ranked by quartile (I hope I'm using that word correctly) in our rejection email. I'm not sure if those who were accepted were given any indication of how they ranked.

We weren't! But I'm really curious.

Interesting. I think I understand the logic behind that policy. It could undermine a collaborative learning environment and foster competition among students that could easily turn negative. In that respect, I support the policy.

This was my first time applying and I was quite surprised I got in due to the competitive nature of the program. My GPA was a 3.82 at the time I submitted my application, and I felt relatively confident in my CASPer answers. I come from a strong healthcare background, which definitely helped during my CASPer, and supplemental application. I also browsed previous year's forums to see how I could strengthen my supplemental application. What really helped me was answering the supplemental section in paragraph form, and then linking it back to how my experience is relevant to nursing.

Does anyone know if UBC uses your average or GPA?

Received my acceptance a few days ago alongside the others, such a wonderful email! Congratulations to all those successful, and I'm sorry to those others. We all know what a stressful, difficult, and tough process this application was and the waiting that followed, but if you weren't successful this year you will be that much more prepared to apply next year!

I noticed someone had started a Facebook group, can you add me? I'm trying to find the group but am having no luck. Send me a pm and I can send my email and contact info!
