OMG! why does everyone HATE NURSING!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I read a thread titled, "would you encourage your son/daughter to go into nursing." About 98% of the people said its the worst profession, they would rather have their child dig ditches. They talk about how miserable it is physcially and mentally. People had said they would rather do any other job, litterally any other job. Someone even said they wouldnt do it if it was the last job on earth. I was exztremely extremly surprsied to read all this! wow, kind of let down, being a student busting my ass off through nursing school right now.:scrying:

Read some of the stories in the "sticky" about why people became nurses....not all of us hate our profession!:redbeathe

This is a JOKE RIGHT??? If this any way is how any nurse feels,I feel sorry for them and even more sorry for the patients and co workers.

Methinks this poster just has the cojones to speak up about how a lot of nurses these days TRULY feel a lot of the time. Seriously.

I agree...it was a little blunt in the way it was worded but I think the person meant there are far too many nurses who play the martyr and neglect to take care of their needs as well as the pts.

Oh... this is what I'm doing wrong - I care! Sure I've tried it the other way: ignoring call lights, pretending I don't hear pt's calling out, refusing to help my co-workers, cutting pts off so I don't have to listen to their nonsense. Somehow that didn't really seem to work well for me. I'm sure you are a pleasure to work with!

I love being a nurse. Tis quite a challenge to be one nowadays though.

I don't hate nursing at all. I hate that it is impossible to actually do it anymore in too many cases. It is overregulated and micromanaged to death. We don't need more nursing instructors or even more nurses; they are out there, well over 400,000 RNs with licenses who won't work in a hospital setting anymore, and many more who will work only part-time. What we need is several hundred fewer Joint Commission and state regulators who are constantly making new demands that increase the workload tremendously without contributing anything valuable at all that actually helps the patient.

I don't really hate it but am tiring of it after 23 years. Awsmom8 got it right with the statements of how nurses get tired of the madatory OT, short-staffing, etc.

My mother was a nurse and when I told her I was going to go into nursing when I started at university she was not exactly pleased. Now that I am an RN I can see exactly what she means. In school you really get jaded about how its going to be. You can't help everyone, you aren't going to save the world, and there will be many days, as others have said, that just keeping them alive is an accomplishment. Finding this out after 4 years of school really changed your perspective on things. Do I hate nursing? No. I never went into nursing because I wanted to be a nurse, however. I went because I saw the economy crashing and burning in front of my eyes, I saw people getting out of 4 years of college and not having a stable job and working min. wage. I thought this was a waste of my education. I wanted to be able to have a job no matter what, and now, at 23 years of age, I am in a better position than any of my friends who didnt make the same decision. I learned to like nursing along the way, and love SOME PARTS of nursing. I love being in the most trusted profession on the planet. I love the days that I get to help people who really need me. I love my specialization (ICU) as I get to have that adrenaline rush of pushing meds and doing compressions on a weekly basis. I love the money (for being so young $20/hr i great! I am starting an FT perdiem job soon for $38/hr in a place where the average home costs 100K). I want to become Dr. Nurse someday, get my doctorate, not go to med school that is. I have a million options in a million specializations to make any dream I have come alive.

Lastly, would I tell my daughter or son to go into nursing? Yes! There are VERY few jobs where this kind of job security exists. I will say this, dont stagnate. If you hate your job, do something else!!! In our profession its easy to just pick up and do something else! Educate yourself FAR past nursing school. Get involved in comittees and volunteer, make sure you are heard. Be a part of the solution instead of the problem. I really think that if every nurse had that mentality instead of just complaining all the time, we'd be a lot farther than we are.

It's a very tough job. It's tough on me mentally, emotionally, physically. But I keep going back, because it's what I do. I don't hate it when I can do it right, I hate it when I'm forced to do it wrong. That risks my patient's life and/or mine and that is unacceptable.

:yeahthat:!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I couldn't have said it any better!

I have many friends and neighbors who lately are interested in nursing and I always encourage them to pursue the career, but not without getting a job as an aide first. This gives you the best insight into nursing and lets you see the good and bad. I also remind them that while it is a very rewarding job, there are negative aspects of it and you will have bad days. I think the problem is that when someone thinks of nursing, all they think of is hospital nursing which is stressful and can be very difficult. There is also school nursing, doctors office, nursing ed, forensic nursing, I mean just look at all the specialty threads in this website and you can see all the types of nursing available!! Also, what other profession offers you to be a travel RN where you get paid more, usually they pay for your housing, and you can travel the country and even the world!! If you don't like the place your assigned to, just give it a few months and then you're off to the next hospital!! There are so many professions out there that are so much more stressful, and its not just one day, but every day of the week. Just to give an example: my father used to work for a large corporation in manhattan right in the heart of the business area. After 9/11, he got laid off but other people stayed. Well, he will tell you to this day that getting fired is the best thing that ever happened to him. He is now self employed, makes his own hours, doesn't have to report to anyone to take vacation, and only travels 15mins to work instead of over an hour. He still talks to people who work at his old office and they are absolutely misreable and extremely depressed. I don't think nursing has made any of us extremely depressed, and there are still plenty of jobs even after 9/11. I would recommend this job to anyone, as long as they are not in it for the money only.
