I read a thread titled, "would you encourage your son/daughter to go into nursing." About 98% of the people said its the worst profession, they would rather have their child dig ditches. They talk about how miserable it is physcially and mentally. People had said they would rather do any other job, litterally any other job. Someone even said they wouldnt do it if it was the last job on earth. I was exztremely extremly surprsied to read all this! wow, kind of let down, being a student busting my ass off through nursing school right now.:scrying:

I have many friends and neighbors who lately are interested in nursing and I always encourage them to pursue the career, but not without getting a job as an aide first. This gives you the best insight into nursing and lets you see the good and bad. I also remind them that while it is a very rewarding job, there are negative aspects of it and you will have bad days.

Ditto that! I do the same thing. I had received the same advice 30 years ago (oh Lord, am I getting old now!). Best career advice I have ever received. The experience was a huge help when I did enter nursing school and start clinicals. Not all careers allow you the opportunity to get hands-on experience while you consider your options. Obviously CNA experience is not the same level of responsibility, but it does give you valuable exposure to the profession - the good, the bad and the ugly.

I love nursing. I have a business degree also and worked as an accountant before nursing. My brother is a nurse also. He has a business degree too. Now, my sister, at 45 yr old, has just started nursing school. She, too, has a business degree. My wife's a nurse and yes, I'd encourage my kids to be nurses. In my opinion, it's the best job out there.

i absolutely refuse not to get stressed out. i will be one nurse not on anti-depressants...lmao!

I agree. I would quit nursing if I had to take any antidepressant/antianxiety medication. I work prn ( per diem) and like it because I can come any time I want to my unit, have full control of schedule, don't have to ask for vacation, can work 4,8 or 12 hrs. That's the best part of nursing. I am a happier nurse now because of that.:nurse:
