Olivet Nazarene FNP

Published

Hi! I'm looking at FNP programs. What have you heard about Olivet Nazarene University? I've heard great things so far. The only thing I'm a little worried about is the curriculum; it looks like there aren't as many core FNP classes as there are in other programs. Has anyone gone through their FNP program? Have any insight? Thanks!

If you are a future student in their FNP program, please read my comments. I dislike to write bad reviews on an institution's all nurses website especially since I was an instructor there, but I could not stop myself after seeing what I saw while working at this University. I was an MSN professor and clinical staff here in the past. I have seen so many staff members openly discriminate against minorities who voice any concern about the program. Certain staff at ONU Nursing go after students without any reason. One student cried to me after few of his Professor created problems for him. As an instructor, I would not recommend this University to anyone. I have effectively resigned. Several of the staff in the department were also planning to do so back in January 2017.

Ericnava,

Where are you at in the program? I am in health assessment now. I spoke with Dr Bruely the MSN director after sending my

Complaints and concerns about the lack of preparation and education for exams in patho and pharm. she was actually very nice and said they are actively working to revise study guides in the program to make them more useful as well and talking about lengthening the course from 6 weeks. Of course this is all just talk at this point... I just hope I can pass at this point.

That's what we've all been hearing for years. But not only do they ignore the requests and complaints, they update the handbook so that you can't complain about xxx and xxx anymore.

I applied to this program and my friend is currrently in the program. I heard it's a lot of papers. How's the studying part?

I am in Informatics at Olivet Nazarene, Patho and Pharm are coming up soon and after reading these comments

I'm a bit worried! Did most students end up passing patho and pharm? Any suggestions?

Patho and pharm are pretty tough because the exams are proctored and the amount of material on each exam every 2 weeks (about 500+ pgs). I passed but patho especially was the toughest class I have taken in my 8 years of college but it is doable as about 70% of my class passed. Use the study guides ONU provides but do not solely rely on them. They are not inclusive and you will surely fail if you only study off them. Unfortunately you have to read every chapter and every page and take a lot of notes. I put in about 5 hours of studying everyday and this was my 3rd patho class and 2nd pharm class. Like I said they are tough but you can pass if you put in effort.

I am half way through. I would strongly suggest going to another school. Idk how far your friend is but it was a very doable and normal program up till patho. At that point things take a turn for the worst. I'm not be dramatic but this is my 5th degree and ONU is by far the worst program. People do pass and I hope to be one of them but ONU is definitively at the bottom of the quality barrel.

Olivet is awful. They require you to write about 30 pages of researched and cited pages a week and then take several tests a week. You spend 70% of your time writing and can not study the 500 or so pages per week. They had a 81% NCLEX pass rate in 2016. My class started with 30 something students and only 7 graduated in 16 months, as promised. Eric, who comented below was in my class and would have been a great nurse. I had clinicals with him. I believe, they kicked out all the minorities. Many students were kicked out of the program the semester before graduation so they wasted $45,000 or so and got nothing but loans. We suspect they are on probation with accreditation and so are just kicking everyone out of school. Other universities might try to figure out how to have a better learning environment.

They send you to clinicals at a hospital an hour away only to be sent home because the school did not complete their paperwork. So unorganized!! The department chair and many of the professors are terribly hateful to students. RUN, dont waste your money, your life, your energy, and your dreams.

Forgot to mention, only 5 people in Adult Health 3 were passing before finals last semester out of about 18. This semester only 3 - 4 are passing out of the same amount. Again, if they do not fail you before they will get you the last semester, after you spend the $45,000. About half the class had prior masters degrees in my cohort. They do not admit just anyone, but still fail smart experienced students with their hateful rules. If a test answer is marked wrong but is really right, they will not change the score. If they make a mistake, the student still suffers for it. JUST SAY NO TO OLIVET!!

Go somewhere else! Your problems are the tip of the iceberg. I am a graduate and my friends (who were not kicked out) are still struggling. I passed the NCLEX with 75 questions but was still terribly stressed about actually learning content, versus writing papers all the time. I also have 4 degrees including several graduate degrees. I had friends who were foreign physicians. We all barely passed Olivet (many have not yet passed).

I'm assuming you are referencing the RN program at ONU since you mentioned NCLEX. This thread is regarding their FNP program. Still good info for prospective students to stay far away though

Hi All,

I'm supposed to start in feb 2018, I just read some HATEFUL reviews on other sites, getting a little nervous... can anyone testify to this problem... as far as the finding preceptor thing that's pretty much universal.

DO NOT GO TO OLIVET! I cannot stress how bad they are. They are arrogant, unhelpful, mean, unorganized, and poor teachers. They have no concern or commitment to assist their students to graduate on time or graduate at all. They are so busy trying to get their own doctorates that they do not care nor want to be bothered by the students. Believe those bad reviews.
