Olivet Nazarene FNP

Published

Hi! I'm looking at FNP programs. What have you heard about Olivet Nazarene University? I've heard great things so far. The only thing I'm a little worried about is the curriculum; it looks like there aren't as many core FNP classes as there are in other programs. Has anyone gone through their FNP program? Have any insight? Thanks!

Hello Mel 73, I started Olivet's FNP program in 2011 and just completed 2013 There are students still having issues in continuing the program. They only have 4 core courses if you are only getting the FNP as Post-Master's certificate. Looking back , I wish I had applied to other programs that teach you how to become a FNP. You have to find your own preceptors which is horrible ,most NP programs get students in and don't care if they have preceptors or not. Please do not look at the time frame 13 months to obtain this certificate, look at reputable schools and their passing rates. My classmates passed the FNP exam some of them and I will be taking my exam May 2014. Olivet is known for having accelerated programs. However, stay away from this program.

Ladydi RN,

Thank you for your reply. I tried to look up passing rates for various schools and not all of them are published. Having gone through Olivet's program- do you know what their passing rate is? Were there a lot of your classmates that have not passed the exam? What are the issues students are having in finishing the program, is it just looking for preceptors? Do you feel like the classes Olivet offers prepare you adequately for the FNP exam? Or not really? Thank you again for your response, I really appreciate it.

Hi, I'm currently finishing the Olivet FNP program. Though I agree that the program is little behind in regards to FNP classes, we now have a new director and the program is now changing.

First, FNP courses such as hypertension and diabetes management is now being added. Though you have to find your own preceptor, more hours are being added and they are willing to assistance you with locating one.

Secondly, the program does offer a ANCC review course after you are done with your classes. This tremendously will help in attaching all the key concepts you have learned. For the graduating classes ahead if me ( December class) they have so far, all have passed they exam from what we have been notified.

With all of that being said, I believe you should really do your own research and call the director of the program. She is more then willing to answer any concerns or questions you have. It is a accelerated program by they have made changes for the better.

Lastly, any program you choose have their own ups and downs. Schooling is only what you make of it.

I hope this helps

Thank you for your reply, it was informative and actually very helpful!

how many of your classmates worked fulltime when completing the program?

how many people failed out?

hi Mel73. I'm actually looking into Olivet FNP program. Have you decided to go to this school? If so, what are your experiences so far. Thanks!

hi. NerdyNikki. Your post was very informative. Any updates on how the program is now? Thanks!

Hi RJGRhere and Suzygreenberg,

I did decide to attent Olivet for my FNP. So far things have been fine. As NerdyNikki said, they have made a lot of changes to their curriculum and I now have no doubt that it is up to the same standards as other schools. I am set to gradaute in May of 2016. Being an accelerated program, at times it is time consuming, but I think its worth it. I am working full time, as are all of my classmates that I know of at this time. When clinicals start that may have to change, we will see.

NerdyNikki, how did everything go? Are you a FNP now? How was boards? I hope you had good luck and have landed a new job by now :) Thanks again for your initial reply.

did you start in the october 2014 cohort? I started in the october 2014 cohort as well, I don't have enough posts to send a PM, was going to ask you questions about the up coming ethics class

How did the program turn out? I'm interested in going there for my FNP as well and I am strongly considering it since its just 24 months long.

I've applied there. The admissions coordinator said that I should be ok, but since I graduated with my BSN and Masters in Nursing from a different country, they are still looking at my documents. I'll probably find out next week. I like that it's 24 months, but I'm worried about how accelerated it is. 6 week classes may mean no time for a full-time job, and I have a full-time job.

Hi Mel73,

I am currently a senior in a BSN program and is interested in applying for Olivet's FNP program. Did you start the program yet? How do you like to program so far? What was the application process like? Any information/tips will greatly be appreciated!
