an oldie but goodie

Published

For all us ancient ones, how about remembering an oldie - aramine IV drip!

Was watching an oldie TV channel and Dragnet, Squad 51 (can't remember the real name, but it was with firemen/paramedics Gage & Desoto) and then Emergency came on. Some snakebite pt had bottomed out and was in the ER. All nurse Dixie McCall was doing was taking a manual blood pressure, handing the docs meds (that docs administered) and making phone calls.

No specific directions; just "an aramine drip".

I got the biggest kick watching the nurses walking around in their white uniform dresses and their white heeled shoes (beige pantyhose) and wearing their caps. (I am an antique nurse who loves nursing caps!).

So for you all you nurses out there, what are some of the obscure and oft forgotten meds that we all used to use at some time can you name???

Aramine precipitated this thread, but I also offer that oldie, aldomet. Any others???

Okay I know the 80s doesn't seem that old but that was my childhood, and boy do I miss my stirrup pants and skip-it!

I wore stirrup pants with tall cordovan boots that had buckled belts around the ankles.....and sometimes with ballet flats and leg warmers :)

Midi-skirts, anyone? They were '80's ish I believe. I'm a shortie so midi skirts came down to my ankles. Not my style.

Stirrup pants? N-E-V-E-R!!!

I'd gladly have given up the big hair, blue eye shadow and neon colored outfits of the 80s/90s to have grown up anytime from the 40s-60s, women just looked so much more polished and classy back then, in my opinion.

Oh yeah, and I had no shortage of stone washed jeans and one piece, zip up jump suits. My mom LOVED buying me those lol

Oh and I am watching Backdraft and apparently in the 90s they still did mouth to mouth CPR on scenes of fires, if this is at all accurate lol.

Tie-dyed clothes, anyone?

I, too, love watching old movies and admiring the fashions of the time, particularly the gowns. The gowns I most liked had 'shiny' sequins or bugle beads, esp on the shoulder pads and waistlines; they glistened. The evening gowns were beautiful but it was those lingerie, nightgown gowns that were spectacular. They just draped on the actresses who were all so slender and they seemed to 'glide' as they walked.

I also love the hats. Veils, feathers, flowers, etc and the large ones were the most beautiful. I am a 'hat woman' have my collection of hats. I guess that's part of the reason why I so like our old nursing caps.

Flecainide an old fashioned anti-arrythmic that has fallen out of favor, though still get a patient that uses it once in a blue moon. Also don't see procardia anymore for HTN, now they use clonidine.

I know Dalmane isn't really used anymore but when I had Lasik surgery three years ago they prescribed it to sleep the whole day/night after the procedure. Now at the time I was on a somewhat high dose of seroquel to sleep because of such bad insomnia, so I wasn't confident the Dalmane would knock me out. Well I took it and didn't wake up for 18 hours lol, best sleep I ever had! Why don't they use it anymore?

Maybe because patients wouldn't wake up and do their PT the next day?

Dalmane also used to cause morning headaches as a major side effect. I tried it a couple times - the headache was nasty.

People were also groggy and felt 'dragged out' in the morning. And it made them 'stupid' too. Like they couldn't think straight, like it was an effort to concentrate.
