Old Nursing Books

Published

This may have already been discussed, graduating in May, starting a job August 18th, I do not think I will need some of my nursing books, so my questions is, did you all keep/sale/giveaway your nursing books? Just looking for some advice, i've sold some of my speciality books, like psych, peds, and managament books, but I'm still holding on to my Med-Surg, and the fun (sarcasm) Nursing Dx books!

Thanks, newbienurse2011

Specializes in hospice, HH, LTC, ER,OR.

I kept all my books..

Specializes in L&D.

Sold most on Amazon...I kept med/surg and OB (because it was an older version!). I figure you can always look any information that you would need up online

Specializes in Home Health/Peds PACU.

I saved mine from my BSN program because I didn't save them from my ADN program and wished I had... I have referenced the ones I saved.

Congrats on becoming a nurse!!!

Kept all my books. Later, was sorry I didn't sell them when I had the chance to get something for them.

Specializes in Med/Surg, Ortho, ASC.

Exactly as caliotter3 said. I hung onto them for reference and now they are useless to both me and anyone else due to being outdated. In my defense, the internet had not yet been invented by Al Gore and I could not have foreseen the research possibilities.

Sell 'em while you can.

Yes, there was no internet back then and I thought I was keeping a useful professional library.

Specializes in Neuro/Trauma, 66H.

I graduated back in december, i got rid of everything that was worth something even before graduation! lol

I did hold on to my med-surg book, figure it might make a good reference at some point. But i agree with roser13, sell them while you can because its astonishing how quickly these books devalue. My psych book from even just 2 years ago is worth less than $5 now..

Things change so fast that many textbooks can become out dated.

Being as that may used to have tons of old books given to me by aunts and others. Some of those Lippincott books were from the 1970's and even 1960's. Fun to look at in terms of how treatments and things have changed since then (when was the last time you saw a nurse in an isolation gown wearing a cap?), but not too valuable otherwise.

Only things left in my stash are "The Lippincott Manual of Nursing Practice" (Third Edition) and Practical Drug Therapy (Richard I.H. Wang; MD, copyright 1979).

If your books are current and still in use you might try selling them on, or maybe donate to a school or something for a student who cannot afford new or even used.

Specializes in Cardiac Care.

I just graduated in May as well & sold most of them to a company called Valore Books...check it out online. They give decent prices & pay for the shipping of the books to them. You get a check within 2 weeks. I considered keeping a few books but after asking a friend who's been a nurse for 10 years if she's ever referenced books & her reply was NO, I figured it was best to get rid of them.

Specializes in ER, progressive care.

Sold the ones I didn't need (psych, OB, peds) and kept the ones from med-surg and critical care.

To add to what caliotter said: I would write all of the isbns down and look them all up on half.com. If it was a $100 book now on sale for a low of $0.75 you might as well keep it. If it is still the latest edition you could probably make some money off of it. Good luck :D
