Ok to take Anabolic steroids as RN?

Nurses General Nursing

First off, this is not a thread on your opinions of steroids and whether or not they are safe, unsafe, immoral, etc., what I am asking is if the nursing board would see taking steroids as taking any other drug, like marijuana or cocaine, now obviously they are way different and steroids are illegal but i dont think that they would get you into legal trouble with being an RN, plus they couldnt really test for them, as steroids are not in a drug panel, this may be impossible to answer, and you would never get caught while taking them, but what would happen if you did?

Wrong. We can give our opinions here. This is a forum. If you post something, it's expected that you will get an opinion.

thanks for adding value to this thread....

its funny how it says that if its prescribed legally, which is easy to get, that they are ok to take, thats very interesting.

Yeah, there is a difference. Taking them because you have diagnosed medical condition and it was prescribed by a physcian is one thing. Taking them because you bought them without a prescription is another.

Exactly. Same as any prescription drug. Taking Percocet for pain with a doctor's order is legal, taking Percocet obtained off the street is not legal.

I will remind all members to keep discourse on the thread friendly. And yes, when you post a question on a public board, you will get opinions you may very well not agree with. Please refer to Terms of Service for clarification as needed.

Thanks!

I hope I am not adding fuel to the fire of this thread, but this is a classic direction for any "anabolic steroid" question. For some reason, it touches nerves, and I can't figure it out for the life of me. I knew it would go in that direction when I posted the first time. Low and behold, it did.

As far as I saw, the OP asked a legit question about what is a legal drug. If he asked it about another similarly controlled schedule III drug like vicodin, I doubt if the response would be as "colorful".

It depends. If the OP is taking vicodin without a prescription, the response would be the same as the response he received about the steroids. It's one thing to take anabolic steroids with a prescription, it's a whole different situation if one is taking them illegally. As long as the OP has a script for anabolic steroids, no problems.

Very simple answer here: If you are taking ANY controlled substance with a physician's prescription, you are in the clear legally for possession of the substance. You can still be liable for knowingly coming to work in an impaired manner and endangering patients, whether it be sedated from prescription pain med or acting out from the effects of anabolic steroids. If you are taking any controlled substance without a prescription, having obtained them in any other manner, you are breaking the law and could be open to action against your license for your illegal act.

I have noticed multiple posts from individuals trying to justify their use of illegal (or illegally obtained) substances and it just doesn't wash. You know going into it that you are not to do these things if you want to be licensed, so you need to decide which is more important to you - being a nurse or using the substance, then abide by your decision either way. It's not a moral issue, just very plain parameters that you are well aware of.

Because this thread is not intended for personal opinion on steroids, take your constitutional right crap somewhere else, and the answer that i was looking for was posted by nursbee04, thanks for that, its funny how it says that if its prescribed legally, which is easy to get, that they are ok to take, thats very interesting.

I have a prescription for valium. Does that mean I should take it on the job???

Who are you to say that we are not allowed to give an opinion? The last time I checked free speech was a constitutional right.

*HUGE DIGRESSION*

You checked wrong, then. There is no Constitutional universal right to free speech. There is simply the defined inability for the government to interfere or restrict your speech. Constitutionality doesn't apply on privately-owned message boards.

I like the TOS.

ALLNURSES.COM is my favorite place partly because of the rules.

True. But my only problem with the OP was the fact he wanted no one's opinion about steroid use. He can't expect someone to not give their opinion. You are right though, the free speech thing doesn't really apply to this board. We can say anything as long as we are not personally attacking another member or saying something rather offensive.

violation of any part of controlled substances act - wikipedia, the free encyclopedia will guarantee you an appearance before the board of nursing. since you already know the answer, someone telling you "it's , ok" is not going to let you off the hook for maintaining your license standards.
