OHSU BSN Fall 2017

Nursing Students School Programs

Hi all I just thought I would start this, since there doesn't appear to be anything started for the Fall 2017 3 year BSN at OHSU. Feel free to update as you get emails regarding interviews, acceptances, etc. This week it looks like everyone should be hopefully getting a email hearing something if they are chosen for a interview. I wonder if due to the lack of any posts for the Fall 2017 that means that competition isn't as fierce as in prior cycles... this is probably not the case. But it seems like the cohort has been alot more quite then in the past.

Thanks for your feedback. I too would do the exact same thing if my employer would contribute to my education. I've heard amazing things about OHSU-SON and I think the only negative thing I have ever heard (other than the higher tuition compared to CC) is the parking issue for the Portland campus. I like the tip you gave about essay/interview answers, great thoughts. I know it makes no sense to me, how I could get an invite to PCC but not OHSU and other's were the opposite. That's one of the drawbacks about the urban setting you have a LOT more applicants vying for cohort spots. I live in WA and our only options in the SW area is Clark College and further up LCC (Lower Columbia in Longview). With the forecasted nursing shortage in the future as Baby Boomers retire from the healthcare industry and start needing more healthcare themselves it makes me curious how come schools aren't increasing their cohort sizes even by a few seats? Just seems like the payoff would be there when you compare/contrast tuition with salary for educators and what not.

I only applied to OHSU, for a couple reasons. I currently work at the VA and was told that the local CC was not accredited by the accreditation institution the VA accepts, and I have the VA to pay for my education so I wanted to get the most out of them (why have them pay for an ADN when I can get them to float my BSN), especially when the trend for a lot of health care systems is to hire BSN's over ADN's. Figured I might as well get it all done from the get-go.

I also had a 3.9~ GPA (I think it was a 3.93 because I had some semester courses which added value to my GPA) when I applied, but I had a lot of the discretionary points; I want to say I had all the points you could get with the exception of GPA (I had taken Microbio, Chemistry, had health care experience). One thing to consider about PCC and OHSU in Portland is they have A LOT of applicants. Even people who have killed it in GPA and discretionary points aren't guaranteed interviews. There's also a pretty heavy emphasis on your application essays. They really like to see people with unique answers to their questions ie "I became passionate about nursing after volunteering to Bolivia, where I helped nurses from Doctor's Without Borders distribute vaccinations to indigenous mountain people," vs. "I want to be a nurse because I know it's a stable, decently paying job that I've wanted to do since I was a kid.

sbaker, how was the kaplan exam? and tips of recommendations?

I heard horrible things about parking too but it's not so bad. On some days when we are only there for 3 hours, I drive (like today) and have never had trouble finding street parking behind the SON. It's 3 hours and a few dollars. Otherwise I take the tram. It's not so bad at all. I know some that drive everyday. I had a higher GPA and more discretionary points last year at MHCC than others I knew that got interviees and didn't. I did get interviews/essays at CCC, PCC and OHSU though. I had thought prior to acceptance I would choose CCC because of cost but as soon as I interacted with people from OHSU I KNEW it was the right choice. I know others in the programs at CCC and PCC, and I'm still happy with my choice.

Also, I had 57 points at Clackamas last year when I was asked to interview. I know it was combined with points from the essay/interview and that is how they offered admission. It may have changed.

The reading section and math were fairly easy and straight forward, received 91% and 100% respectively for those sections. The writing section was ridiculous and super subjective, I received a 76% on that section. The Science was straight physiology and EXTREMELY specific. Questions I would have never thought to look up, and I got a 75% on that. I felt like all the answers for my science section took every ounce of brain power from my experience in clinical work (14 years) and science from school. I got an 87% overall, so that had my adrenaline pumping, because compared to last years scores that should definitely get me in! At this point its either you know it or you don't for the science. You cannot go back to questions after you have moved on, so make your best selection. At the end of the test it tells you your overall score on top, then breaks down how you did on each section and how often you changed from a correct to incorrect, or incorrect to correct answer. Best of luck to you!!!

Interviews were last Friday for Klamath Falls. I'm just ready to find out who gets in. Any info on how long after interviews people here about acceptance?

I believe mid may.

How was your interview

Those who applied to CCC should be getting interview invites this week. I applied and am anxiously awaiting to hear back! Anyone get an email getting the invite yet?

The interviews were great! Definitely not as stressful as one would think. The proctored essay threw me for a loop but overall was not a bad experience. Feeling pretty good about it, then again I'm sure everyone else does as well. Dress nice, relax and breath, and be yourself.

@hopeg97 Mid may seems like a long time, I know someone earlier in this posting said they received their acceptance letters like a week and a half later last year. Did it mention mid may on OHSU website somewhere? I'm hoping that it will be a week and half though because the amount of time to wait sounds like less anxiety for me. haha.:)

My original email said those selected to interview would be invited this week. Anxiously awaiting to hear but not feeling good about my point total- I don't think I received any discretionary points.
