OHSU BSN Fall 2017

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi all I just thought I would start this, since there doesn't appear to be anything started for the Fall 2017 3 year BSN at OHSU. Feel free to update as you get emails regarding interviews, acceptances, etc. This week it looks like everyone should be hopefully getting a email hearing something if they are chosen for a interview. I wonder if due to the lack of any posts for the Fall 2017 that means that competition isn't as fierce as in prior cycles... this is probably not the case. But it seems like the cohort has been alot more quite then in the past.

Thanks for the info nicole! Ultimately were you offered a spot in the program? It's so hard to tell what gets you invited for a interview from year to year or school to school. I've heard really great things about CCC so I'm hoping my mere 47.84 points gets me in. Are you in a program now? If so which one and do you love it? Any insight on interviews, essays, etc. would be great for those of us who have never been through it. Thanks for your input so far!

For those wondering about points at CCC, I had 51.48 points last year and was invited for an interview. It varies each year depending on the competiveness of those applying. Good luck!

I am in OHSU's program, which I love. I posted some tips a few pages back if you want to check them out (:

Hi, can you say more about OHSU program and why you love it?I read a lot of comments where people chose community college over OHSU.

I looked back and saw your thoughts- super helpful information! What other schools did you interview with other than OHSU and ultimately what made you decide on OHSU- SON? Were the point distributions the same last year or have they changed? Just trying to gauge what to expect. This is so nerve wracking!

Hi, can you share about OHSU interview for example how many questions they might ask and if it's a group or individual interview?

I can't say much about the interview other than last year it was a group interview (5 interviewees and 3 or 4 interviewers) along with a proctored essay. I also interviewed at CCC, which had a similar format. I declined to go to MHCC's interview because I had already heard back from OHSU at that point, and OHSU was always my top choice. The decision on which college to choose is very much a personal choice. I chose to go to OHSU because it was highly recommended by nurses I spoke with. I had no prior loans so financial reasons didn't sway me either way, although the price of a community college can be enticing! There are a lot of opportunities and support at OHSU. One of my friends chose to go to CCC, and I have noticed there are some differences in pace. For example, they did injections their first term and have done them on patients, whereas, we learned injections second term and wont be practicing this skill until fall term. Both schools seem to have the same workload, although the actual work seems to be different. Another difference I noticed is that OHSU has traditional classes for pathophysiology and pharmacology whereas CCC's are online (This was a huge factor for me). CCC was my second choice, mostly because campus is about 5 minutes from my house. The only thing I don't like about OHSU is the commute, but I think it is definitely worth it. I'm happy to answer any specific questions (as best as I can!). (:

I can say at the Ashland campus the interviews were short one-on-one sessions (not group interviews). There was also a proctored essay. Our patho and pharm courses are mostly online, with an hour long seminar for both to discuss the information we covered online the previous week.

We also learned injections the first term (did a flu shot clinic at the VA like, our second week of school) and injected insulin all the time in chronic. It's weird seeing how different the OHSU satellites do skills from the Portland campus.

Thank you guys so much for your input and information. This process is so stressful, after all the hard work and dedication these last two years completing prerequisites it's terrifying to think that applications are out there and being reviewed and wondering if our points are enough to get us to the next phase is just about killing me. I did fairly well I had a 3.91 overall GPA and have points for the A&P series, micro and things like that but am lacking in the discretionary points for work experience. I took the CNA course in WA but didn't take the state test and don't have hands on paid experience so I'm beyond stressed and hoping I get selected for an interview. What was your experience like when you applied? How many schools did you apply to and were you selected for interviews at each one? If you were offered a spot in multiple programs what made you select OHSU? Sorry to bombard with questions but getting feedback from others who have most recently been in our shoes is super helpful.

I find it so weird how some of us are invited for interviews and some aren't. For example I got an invite from PCC but not from OHSU (although I've been told by staff to keep an eye on my email as I could get asked still as others decline the interviews) and I know other people on these boards have gotten interviews to OHSU but not been invited to PCC?!? Doesn't balance out in my eyes. I'm super nervous to hear back from CCC (Clackamas) as well, I've heard good things about their program as well. Thanks again for your tips, they are greatly appreciated! Hope you are loving the program!

Does anyone know the percentages of passing for the NCLEX from PCC, CCC (Clackamas), OHSU, MHCC, Clark College or LCC or where to find them? I checked websites and FAQ pages and didn't see anything that specific. Thanks!

I only applied to OHSU, for a couple reasons. I currently work at the VA and was told that the local CC was not accredited by the accreditation institution the VA accepts, and I have the VA to pay for my education so I wanted to get the most out of them (why have them pay for an ADN when I can get them to float my BSN), especially when the trend for a lot of health care systems is to hire BSN's over ADN's. Figured I might as well get it all done from the get-go.

I also had a 3.9~ GPA (I think it was a 3.93 because I had some semester courses which added value to my GPA) when I applied, but I had a lot of the discretionary points; I want to say I had all the points you could get with the exception of GPA (I had taken Microbio, Chemistry, had health care experience). One thing to consider about PCC and OHSU in Portland is they have A LOT of applicants. Even people who have killed it in GPA and discretionary points aren't guaranteed interviews. There's also a pretty heavy emphasis on your application essays. They really like to see people with unique answers to their questions ie "I became passionate about nursing after volunteering to Bolivia, where I helped nurses from Doctor's Without Borders distribute vaccinations to indigenous mountain people," vs. "I want to be a nurse because I know it's a stable, decently paying job that I've wanted to do since I was a kid.

I also didn't find anything about the graduation rates.
