Hi all I just thought I would start this, since there doesn't appear to be anything started for the Fall 2017 3 year BSN at OHSU. Feel free to update as you get emails regarding interviews, acceptances, etc. This week it looks like everyone should be hopefully getting a email hearing something if they are chosen for a interview. I wonder if due to the lack of any posts for the Fall 2017 that means that competition isn't as fierce as in prior cycles... this is probably not the case. But it seems like the cohort has been alot more quite then in the past.
okay great! And in no way was I asking that with the intentions that you would give me the actual question. I was more curious as to how you felt it went and the length. Luckily this time tomorrow I will be done with it and no longer have to worry about my portion of this application process.
It's been a long process, I am ready to know what this next school year will look like for me... and I am sure you all are feeling the same way.
I have a question for everyone out here looking to get into the healthcare field. Has anyone heard anything about respiratory therapy (RT)? I've heard several really good things about the program and the profession but have also heard a few random negative things. Just like anything there are always going to be pros/cons but wanted to see if any of you had some good information to pass on. Here in the Vancouver/Portland area the only school that offers it is MHCC and I applied this last application period. They only take 20 students into the yearly cohort that starts every fall. I searched some of the area hospitals job boards and it seems that there are several positions open for RT's and the pay is pretty comparative to that of a RN (just slightly less). But those facts aside the thought of the role of an RT really intrigues me. TIA for any info!
P.S. Those of you who were waiting to here back from OHSU yesterday or today have you heard anything? Fingers crossed for you guys!
RT's are highly utilized in large hospital settings, if that is where you want to focus your skills. I work in a small hospital and we have a RT on site Monday-Friday 8-4. That RT assists with outpatient surgical procedures, scheduled respiratory treatments, EKGs in the ED and for the cardiologist for outpatient appointments when he is onsite. But that is for my hospital. I know for example in Lincoln City the RT's do a lot more because of the diverse flow vs minimum staff.
This is great to hear. Whether I continue down the RN path or think about RT I know I definitely want to work in the larger hospital setting. Ive always heard from other's who have completed the RN program that you might go in with your mind dead set on a specific area to focus on (peds, L&D,etc.) and finish with a totally different opinion so I'm not thinking of one particular area and trying to be totally optimistic. I feel like in the scenario you just described it would be a great fit for what I would like to do (as of now!) so I really appreciate your comment. Just trying to keep multiple doors open at this point.
What do you do now in the smaller hospital? What school is your top choice right now for RN?
