OHSU ABSN 2019-2020

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi all! Is anyone an applicant for the ABSN program for the 2019-2020 cohort for OHSU? It's such a competitive program and I'd love to share insights and chat with anyone else going for it this year. As you might be able to tell, I'm applying for the nurse-midwifery program. My stats aren't that great but I'm going to cross my fingers and hopefully learn from the experience ?

I applied for the ABSN program only and sadly did not get a call from OHSU thus far :(. I had a 3.95 overall undergraduate GPA and a 3.94 prerequisite GPA so I am a little disappointed that I did not get an interview, but I also have not had a ton of healthcare experience, so maybe that ruled it out for me.

Good luck to those of you who did get an interview!

Sorry to hear that! It sounds like you have academically excelled so do not let this one decision get you down. I didn't get an invitation either, and now the waiting for Linfield's ABSN begins for me. Did you apply to any other programs?

I'm still awaiting word of invitations for the ABSN program in Ashland -- please post if you get one. Thanks!

Congrats to all who have earned an interview for your respective programs and good luck to everyone!

Congratulations everyone who is offered an interview date...great work! I gather from this thread that only PORTLAND ABSN interviews have been offered up to now.

Is this true?

Thanks and I wish you all the best!

First round interview invites have gone out for ABSN on the Ashland campus. At least one applicant on this thread who applied to that program said they received one.

I applied to the ABSN-to-DNP/FNP program in Ashland. Besides their reputation, OHSU's program was the only one I was eligible for this year, and it is by far the most geographically favorable option of all the schools I considered. I've yet to receive an invitation for an interview, so I assume I didn't make the first round (if any round). It's my understanding that OHSU's pre-screening process ranks qualified applicants by GPA and works down from the top of the list, when selecting for interviews. I hadn't heard of this until recently from a former OHSU alum. Anyone familiar with the selection process? My GPA is underwhelming (3.3) without regard for the rigor of my program (BS in Chemistry w/ biology minor), research experience and community outreach. My prereq GPA is higher (3.6), but also unremarkable without considering that all but A&P are fulfilled by 300 & 400 level STEM courses. If OHSU pre-screens applicants this way and only interviews double the number of applicants they have seats for, then I have a better chance of synthesizing metallic hydrogen than I do getting into this year's cohort. ?

If by some chance I make it past the pre-screen, there's a lot about my application that I think shines. I scored an 88 on the TEAS (97th percentile). My references include an ICU nurse, a tenured chemistry professor and a prevention and outreach director for La Clinica. I've completed research capstones in molecular biology and chemistry. My volunteer experience is diverse and predominated by community outreach, including advocating for migrant farm workers. I've been a licensed massage therapist for almost 9 years, most of which was spent at a wellness clinic where I worked in cooperation with chiropractors, FNPs & physicians. I transitioned to private practice 4 years ago and thus, assumed all the responsibilities of practice management, including insurance billing/coding. I grew up on a farm and handled all the standard care and disease prevention duties, so there's not much that "grosses me out". I've stitched up lacerations, drawn blood, administered vaccines... you name it, I probably did it.

Not sure if any of these experiences amply compensate for my GPA in the eyes of the admissions committee, but it's out of my control. If I don't get into OHSU, I plan to apply to ABSN programs at CSUN, NAU and CSU Pueblo for their 2020 cohorts. Where else have you all applied (if anywhere else)?

Anyway, congratulations to all of you who have been invited to interviews! I'm sure you'll all slay! ?

Nice, I'm sure you'll get in somewhere if OHSU doesn't work out. I got a call on Feb 1st for an interview for ABSN-FNP Ashland on Feb 21. I didn't receive an email for an ABSN interview and I did also apply to the ABSN-only track, so I'm unsure if I don't make it into the ABSN-FNP program if I'll be considered for the ABSN.

I have a 3.4 total GPA and prereqs are probably 4.0ish as of now, I'm still finishing a few of them. I have a masters in physiology, several publications, EMT and teaching experience. I applied to Johns Hopkins, Columbia, Upenn, Azusa, and UMiami. I was thinking about applying to Roseman and Creighton as well. So far I've been accepted to Hopkins and Columbia, rejected from UPenn, and haven't heard back from the others.

I'd love to attend OHSU but if I don't get in I'll definitely be ok with going to the east coast.

Good luck to you on your journey!

I bit the bullet and called OHSU admissions. For the Portland ABSN folks, they confirmed that if you have not received an interview invite, you have not been admitted to the program. Disappointing result for me, and annoying that they don't send you a concrete answer via email. But I've gotten into every other school i've applied to (thus far) and I knew OHSU would be a bit of a long shot. Good luck to all the interviewees!!

Hi everyone! I'm so glad to have found this thread. I applied to the OHSU ABSN Portland campus and received an interview last week! I am in group 2A on March 1st at 9:30 AM. Is anyone else in this group? I am so looking forward to interviewing and meeting people there! I'm sure we will all do great.

Thanks, I was referring to the ABSN only track in Ashland with March 15-16 interview dates.

Did you get an invite for an Ashland interview? I didn't see anyone on this thread that has gotten an ABSN interview invite yet. I've seen a few Ashland ABSN - DNP invites but I didn't think they were the same.

Does anyone else know if Ashland ABSN invites have gone out? The interview is 2 weeks after the Portland campus so I'm patiently and hopefully waiting....

I haven't received an interview invite for Ashland's ABSN, but an acquaintance did. That's not to say you won't receive an invite later. With many healthcare programs, including those at OHSU, there is a second round of interviews, in the event they do not fill all the spots after the first round. One of my clients was interviewed by OHSU for their dental program in the second round, and didn't actually receive official notice of being accepted until just a couple weeks prior to matriculation.

Thank you. Good luck to you, as well. Honestly, had I known this was the caliber of applicants applying for the ABSN-to-DNP/FNP track, I wouldn't have bothered, lol! I couldn't find anything on OHSU's SoN page regarding the average stats of those seeking this track, and the eligibility requirements were the same as the ABSN, so I never expected that some may already be so well-accomplished in their field. Guess I have some work to do.

Hi all,

Long-time listener, first-time caller. I applied to the Ashland ABSN program and have not heard anything yet either. Still trying to stay hopeful for another week or so.
