OHSU ABSN 2019-2020

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi all! Is anyone an applicant for the ABSN program for the 2019-2020 cohort for OHSU? It's such a competitive program and I'd love to share insights and chat with anyone else going for it this year. As you might be able to tell, I'm applying for the nurse-midwifery program. My stats aren't that great but I'm going to cross my fingers and hopefully learn from the experience ?

I got an email for an interview! Feb 28 at 8 am! Let me know if any of you are group 1C. Also, any ideas/strategies for preparing? I've never done a group interview before and am really anxious about it. Any ideas what they'll ask? Also, what are y'all wearing? Eeeeeek! Good luck to everyone--if you haven't gotten an email yet, don't lose hope.

Me too!! March 1st 4A 1pm!!! Let’s crush this! I feel like nerves are half the battle in an interview, so even being familiar with one person in the room will be an advantage to both of us. Let’s chat!

Yes please! Shoot me an email. I’m so nervous, haha. But I agree that it will be nice to have a familiar face in the room.

I got an interview for the ABSN program, and ABSN to DNP, Pediatrics program!

Was wondering if any of your interview invites for the ABSN program specified if you got into the Summer or Fall term, I couldn't figure out which mine was for, I put that I preferred Fall 2019, but not sure which I got.

Also feel free to email me, and we can hopefully discuss possible interview questions and whatever: [email protected]

My understanding is that you won't know until after interviews when they make their final decisions, they will send an email and let you know that you've been accepted and which entry term you will start.

Hi everyone! I'm a bit late to the game but I'm so happy to find this thread and meet some folks who are also on this exciting path!

I got the email yesterday that I got an interview for the Portland program on Feb 28 - group 2A, starting at 9:30am. I read the email at work and immediately signed out of my computer and basically ran outside to freak out. I definitely didn't expect to get this interview - my undergrad GPA was 3.78 and my prerequisite one wasn't super competitive either - but I think my work/life experiences and essays did the trick. To others who were offered an interview, how are you feeling? Hope to meet you eventually : )

I applied to the ABSN-to-DNP/FNP program in Ashland. Besides their reputation, OHSU's program was the only one I was eligible for this year, and it is by far the most geographically favorable option of all the schools I considered. I've yet to receive an invitation for an interview, so I assume I didn't make the first round (if any round). It's my understanding that OHSU's pre-screening process ranks qualified applicants by GPA and works down from the top of the list, when selecting for interviews. I hadn't heard of this until recently from a former OHSU alum. Anyone familiar with the selection process? My GPA is underwhelming (3.3) without regard for the rigor of my program (BS in Chemistry w/ biology minor), research experience and community outreach. My prereq GPA is higher (3.6), but also unremarkable without considering that all but A&P are fulfilled by 300 & 400 level STEM courses. If OHSU pre-screens applicants this way and only interviews double the number of applicants they have seats for, then I have a better chance of synthesizing metallic hydrogen than I do getting into this year's cohort. ?

If by some chance I make it past the pre-screen, there's a lot about my application that I think shines. I scored an 88 on the TEAS (97th percentile). My references include an ICU nurse, a tenured chemistry professor and a prevention and outreach director for La Clinica. I've completed research capstones in molecular biology and chemistry. My volunteer experience is diverse and predominated by community outreach, including advocating for migrant farm workers. I've been a licensed massage therapist for almost 9 years, most of which was spent at a wellness clinic where I worked in cooperation with chiropractors, FNPs & physicians. I transitioned to private practice 4 years ago and thus, assumed all the responsibilities of practice management, including insurance billing/coding. I grew up on a farm and handled all the standard care and disease prevention duties, so there's not much that "grosses me out". I've stitched up lacerations, drawn blood, administered vaccines... you name it, I probably did it.

Not sure if any of these experiences amply compensate for my GPA in the eyes of the admissions committee, but it's out of my control. If I don't get into OHSU, I plan to apply to ABSN programs at CSUN, NAU and CSU Pueblo for their 2020 cohorts. Where else have you all applied (if anywhere else)?

Anyway, congratulations to all of you who have been invited to interviews! I'm sure you'll all slay! ?

I've also not received any interview info as of yet and am taking that as a bad sign. My undergrad GPA was also not especially competitive. That being said, I've already gotten into one school in New England, where I currently live, and am waiting to hear back from 3 others besides OHSU. Even if it's not at OHSU, I'm sure all of us will eventually find our way to a nursing education ?

Congratulations everyone on your interviews!!!!

Is there anyone else who applied to the ABSN/CNM program and eagerly awaiting next steps?

Me! Do you have more of a clue than me as to the timing of things? Hah, I feel totally in the dark!

Does anyone have any idea what the group interviews are like? It just seems odd that a nursing interview would be in a group, so does anyone have any insight into how they are?

Additionally, if anyone knows anything about the proctored essay, i'd love some advise/ warning on what to be prepared for!?

I applied for the ABSN program only and sadly did not get a call from OHSU thus far :(. I had a 3.95 overall undergraduate GPA and a 3.94 prerequisite GPA so I am a little disappointed that I did not get an interview, but I also have not had a ton of healthcare experience, so maybe that ruled it out for me.

Good luck to those of you who did get an interview!
