OHSU ABSN 2019-2020

Nursing Students School Programs

Hi all! Is anyone an applicant for the ABSN program for the 2019-2020 cohort for OHSU? It's such a competitive program and I'd love to share insights and chat with anyone else going for it this year. As you might be able to tell, I'm applying for the nurse-midwifery program. My stats aren't that great but I'm going to cross my fingers and hopefully learn from the experience ?

It turns out the ABSN-DNP program is more competitive than what one might gather from OHSU's website (around a 6% acceptance rate). The eligibility requirements are the same as the ABSN, but many who apply to the ABSN-DNP track already have advanced degrees in another healthcare field. GPA and previous healthcare experience are important, but as with all programs, the admissions committee will always seek to assemble a cohort that they think will work together best as a whole, so some applicants might not be invited simply because they weren't a good fit with that years cohort. Your stats exceed the minimum requirements by a long shot, so you should have as good a chance as any. If you don't mind the possibility of working a brief stint as an RN, you might consider applying to both ABSN and ABSN-DNP tracks.

Thank you for the insight!!!! I was considering that because my other plan was to be an RN and gain some experience then apply for the AGACNP DNP program and once I've completed that I'd like to work at OHSU as either a clinician or a clinician/adjunct clinical professor the go for my phd. I'm really interested in getting my PhD there because one of the faculty is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and I'm amazed at her progress in her research on cancer rehabilitation, and that actually was one of my inspirations to do my own research on if hula kahiko/`auana can be an effective modality in managing hypertension. But I would like to thank you so much, your reassurance really has helped ease my anxiety and I do appreciate you commenting back.

Does anyone from the current cohort have any advice for interviewing at OHSU? Just trying to get a sense of what to expect!

Did they release interview invites already? I think I got mine beginning of Feb last year. Just be yourself. Don’t overthink it.

Just looking for insight on the group interview structure and proctored writing. I’ve got the being myself part nailed down from other interviews!

4 interviewees, 4 interviewers. Very structured. 2 min responses I think? No follow up questions. All different questions to each interviewee, except one question we all had. Questions were nonspecific to nursing/medicine. They’re trained not to give nonverbal feedback. The rigidity of the interview aims to eliminate as much unconscious bias as possible. Most stressful interview I’ve ever sat through. But I made it in! Good luck! And don’t beat yourself up if you don’t get in. There’s a certain degree of luck with these things.

That’s super helpful, thanks! What was the proctored portion like?

I ended up being invited to interview! Do any current students recall what the proctored portion was like?

Not super ethical to lay out exactly what it's like, but I would just say to review what you wrote for the essay questions on your application.

Thanks @Liz Lemon! Do you have any insight into the group interview portion/timing? A bit nervous about that part and the timed 2 minute limit!

Yes, I wish I could explain in detail what it's like but that's not super ethical! I just commented my advice on the current ABSN 2020 thread if you want to read that. Also, it's okay to be nervous--they totally expect that, and you do get a minute to collect your thoughts before you start speaking, so take that time. And don't beat yourself up if you're not perfectly articulate. It will be okay!

@Liz Lemon is following the ethics code, I love it!!!

I'm in the accelerated program and I'll share a few of my thoughts. I was exactly where you are now, this time last year. Liz is giving you the most honest advice...it's hard to prepare completely for the interview, let alone an accelerate nursing program.

On paper, I barely met all the criteria for the application...barely. I received an email inviting me to interview! 350+ people applied to the program and I was picked to interview?! Unreal. My undergraduate GPA was poor, and I was doing what you are doing right now. Pouring over posts, trying to get a sense of the application pool, stressed about the interview, feeling grateful I was invited for an interview, but am I even in the running? My wife and I were planning on how we were move to Philadelphia, New York, and other back up schools that I had been accepted to up to that point. I almost wrote myself off. What made the difference? I knew my goal had been the OHSU ABSN program, I knew why I wanted to be a nurse, and I knew I could accept the challenge of the ABSN.

The biggest lesson I took away from the interview process? You are competing against yourself. Best of luck!

Hi, I was wondering if anyone who is currently in Portland ABSN program could provide me with how classes are structured?
Also with your experience, how has it been so far?
