OHSU ABSN 2019-2020

Published

Hi all! Is anyone an applicant for the ABSN program for the 2019-2020 cohort for OHSU? It's such a competitive program and I'd love to share insights and chat with anyone else going for it this year. As you might be able to tell, I'm applying for the nurse-midwifery program. My stats aren't that great but I'm going to cross my fingers and hopefully learn from the experience ?

I haven’t heard back since sending my deposit in either! I keep wondering the same thing ?

I also haven’t heard back from financial aid. Has anyone else?

Same ! And nothing from Financial aid either, but was wondering if we ever will be hearing from them? Just because I dont know how much aid the school offers

Has anyone heard from Financial aid? While I am not enrolled I did receive admission into Linfields ABSN and I am wondering if OHSU offers any scholarships or what their total costs end up being.

Yes. I contacted them and asked them to send me another one after waiting for it for arrive for a couple weeks. I did get it the second time around, 3-4 days later.

I'm glad you both posted! I've been waiting several weeks for mine to arrive...

Hi all,

I was wondering for those that have been wait listed if there has been any movement for the Portland ABSN.

Thanks!

I'm not sure if anyone else has heard but apparently they are offering a Winter cohort start option for the ABSN for those wait listed! I got an offer yesterday, pretty shocked to say the least because I was listed as "moderately likely" to get in.

@bhosk oh my gosh!! Did they call you? Congratulations!!!!!

Yes, yesterday! Best news ever!

@bhosk I'm really happy for you!!!! That's awesome! ? Let me know if you have any words of advice for aspiring applicants for the 2020 cohort ? I'm reapplying this year!

Hey fellow future nurses, I’m still in undergrad and have been considering ohsu for a long time and as i’m continuing my education at my uni. and doing the prereqs and after reading all of your comments i honestly don’t know if i’m even qualified to even apply to this program. I’m a junior exercise science and psychology major with a minor in geriatric health and wellness as well as in biology my cumulative gpa is 3.83, and my prereq gpa is 3.64. I’m a cna and an emt with over 800 hours of experience as both, as well as volunteered for more than 2000 hours in hospitals, nursing homes, shelters, and schools, i’m also in the gerontology and psychology honor societies, and next spring i’ll be taking the exercise physiologist certification exam (fingers crossed). i have interned/shadowed AGACNP’s and surgeons as well as doing conducting two research projects in cardiac rehabilitation and how stress affects spatial memory acquisition and retention at my university and have presented them at various conferences and have been invited to showcase it elsewhere, and i have experience from shadowing different allied health professions such as clinical psychologist and pt/ot/exercise physiologists because i feel that that’s crucial to being a nurse or any health professional in general. i know that they look at you holistically but my gpa prereqs isn’t so hot compared to what i’ve seen and i’ve been in this funk with my prereq gpa and was wondering if i should take a gap year to redo my stats and nutrition courses (i got b-/b in both classes) or apply and hope i get in. i’m looking to do the absn-phd route and after i’m done go for the AGACNP DNP program at ohsu. thx in advance for your replies i really do appreciate them.

It turns out the ABSN-DNP program is more competitive than what one might gather from OHSU's website (around a 6% acceptance rate). The eligibility requirements are the same as the ABSN, but many who apply to the ABSN-DNP track already have advanced degrees in another healthcare field. GPA and previous healthcare experience are important, but as with all programs, the admissions committee will always seek to assemble a cohort that they think will work together best as a whole, so some applicants might not be invited simply because they weren't a good fit with that years cohort. Your stats exceed the minimum requirements by a long shot, so you should have as good a chance as any. If you don't mind the possibility of working a brief stint as an RN, you might consider applying to both ABSN and ABSN-DNP tracks.
