Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

I just inquired about the MSN-FNP track and it sounds great!

The whole program will cost approx $16,000 and can be completed in 26 months. You take one course every 7 weeks. The program is designed to allow individuals to still be able to work. Here is some of the info they emailed me:

OMG...Now this might change my mindset altogether...I was contemplating taking a long break before pursuing my MS (was interested in public health), but this FNP program sounds exciting...

hi mtsteelhorse, my grades are still not posted. my ta has been pretty slow this entire 5 weeks, and not at all helpful. if anyone had a question regarding the directions, she would just restate the directions to them. not much help there. we can all pretty much read at this point, but some of the directions were unclear. yeah, i am just taking one class at a time. i am not really in any rush. how about you?

has anyone out there taken assessment already? how is the class? just wondering if there is a lot of reading, tests, papers to write, and discussion boards. thanks for any info.

i tested out of assessment, but still had assess to class.

those in the class had to do a comprehensive health hx and genogram, a health paper, 5 discussions plus replies, 8 case studies, and 2 self test quizzes, and 3 graded quizzes.

but, not sure if professors follow the same script when it comes to teaching these classes. and the instructor i had isn't teaching this class. to you might not even have to do all of this stuff.

hths!!

Holy mackerel that sounds like a lot of stuff in 5 weeks!

deltaroxxy2, I'm with you on this FNP thing...sounds REALLY good! I was thinking PMHNP but may opt for FNP as I've been encouraged to do by my supervisor. It provides a lot more options. Pretty exciting! And imagine how much easier it will be to matriculate into their program rather than elsewhere!

Yeah...I would have died taking all of that w/statistics. BUT, the instructors for this term may not require the same stuff.

My friend is in NKU's FNP program. I forwarded the email to her to get her opinion.

Any idea how many students were in NRSE 300? I finally got my grade today! Yippee...cross one off! :yeah:

Oh my ... the FNP program sounds lovely!! And the price!!!! I was seriously thinking of the MSN/CNS program at University of Cincinnati ... price around 2 years at 15,000/year. Didn't want to be an FNP really - my long range plans are to complete an APRN program and do a post-masters certificate in forensic nursing - so I could be an advanced practice forensic nurse. Decisions, decisions....will have to look further into this!!!! :yeah:

It seems like getting the FNP provides a great foundation for many areas of nursing. Forensic nursing sounds fascintating. Good luck sorting through all this great information!

I love forensics. Was recently researching some places to get certified. Not sure which track I need in the graduate program....Ohio only offers 3 or 4 MSN tracks. This is all new to me!!!

University of Illinois at Chicago - found this program through the International Association of Forensic Nurses. All online and it is a post-masters certification. If I enrolled today, price would be around 8600.00 - not sure what it will be in 3 years!!! here is some info

Johns Hopkins has a certification program you can take after completion of a BSN but it is wicked pricey!
