Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

Have any of you transferred credits from a semester-based school to Ohio University when those credits were part of a sequence? Like two semesters of chemistry or physics?

My chemistry sequence on the semester system was fall semester chemistry I w/ lab = 4 semester hours and spring semester chemistry II w/ lab = 4 semester hours, for a total of 8 semester hours for the year-long sequence. That converts to 12 quarter hours (8 x 1.5 = 12).

The freshman chemistry sequnce at OU, however, is 15 quarter hours, spread out over 3 classes worth 5 hours each: chemistry 151, 152, and 153.

I wonder if they'll give me credit for the whole freshman chemistry series or just the first two courses?

What has been your experience transferring sequences like that to OU when the semester hours converted to quarter hours do not match up exactly with that sequence at OU?

You always get the credits - but it may show up under "other" after you meet the requirements for OU. I am from a semester based program - and have an abundance of "extra" credits with OU

michellemybell, how do you take the Mod1 tests twice???!!! I can't get it to open. It just shows that I'm still waiting for the grade. Please advise! Thank you!

hey I tried to send you a PM but the inbox is full lol

I just cleared it! Please resend if you can!

To those who have completed Transitions......there are quite a few discrepancies in various places within this course......test questions using old information/policy, incorrect instructions/wording for assignments (or 2 different statements all together!), stuff like that. Is this NORMAL? In my humble opinion a point is a point and could make the difference between retaking the course and moving on.

Boy, you're not kidding. Especially since you have to have a B- to pass the darn course. And the assignments are small but costly! I think these discrepancies should not be used to mark us down. They need to proof the course before they post it.

Yes they do! I am getting credit for one question so far and I'm working on another! Those tests left me at a low B which makes me nervous. I make sure to read that QA board frequently because students have questioned several things that were unclear/incorrect. One assigmnent statement asked to cite the Purdue website and when questioned on it they actually wanted a full reference!!! That's not good AT ALL! Am I crazy?? lol

Nope, not crazy...this is really unfair. I can't imagine having to repeat the course because of not making the grade when the school doesn't have the course laid out correctly.

I posted about this kind of thing last semester when I took Transitions and it's a bit disconcerting to read that they still haven't corrected the errors.

Ironically, one of the problems was with the information about the grade needed to pass the course. The OU Nursing Student Handbook stated that for the RN-BSN program you needed a "C", which was defined as 80%, to progress. Elsewhere on one of the Knowledge Center pages it stated 80% was a B-. Because of this, I wound up getting a question wrong on one of the quizzes but before I learned that, I e-mailed the TA about the discrepancy. The TA responded by sending my e-mail to the course instructor, who never got back to me. In the end, that point did not make a difference but it easily could have.

It looks like OU still has a couple of things to work on: This and the DARS are two of them. Another is the vague requirement about the format of submitted assignments. For Diversity, we had to do a genogram and were told that though we could do it by hand, it had to be submitted "in an electronic format". I did mine in PowerPoint reasoning that since we're required to have the MS Office Suite, this would be OK. My assignment did not get graded because the instructor could not open the file. I was given the chance to resubmit by e-mail and this time, I sent both the PP file and a Word document with the PP chart embedded in it. I got a note back saying that in future ALL assignments need to be in Word or they will not be accepted. That should be made clear up front - the assignment instructions simply stated they had to be "in an electronic format".

Kind of minor complaints but they could wind up being costly.

Wow...that's not good to hear at all. I'm quite concerned about this class and it's lack of detail and vague information/direction. There is a assignment on creating the APA references is crazy. It leaves lots of questions in my opinion. They actually asked a test question about the grading and a B- was not an option so I got it wrong! I questioned it and in turn received credit for that one. Can't wait until this class is done. Are the rest of them like this????

They've totalyl revamped Trans 300, so I can't even relate to what you are dealing with. Hopefully it will get better as the class progresses.

I've had a few hiccups in 2 classes. One the instructor was receptive to my challenge and gave me credit. The other felt that her answer the was best one EVEN THOUGH her answer was still written incorrectly, and did not grant me credit. Decided to not make a fuss since it is a 10wk class and I need to stay on her good side..LOL

Me too. Actually, I think I got it wrong twice. The first time I put "C" and on the retest "B" since the correct answer, "B-" was not an option. But like I said earlier, it was one point that didn't make a difference in the end, so I didn't bother about it.
