Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.
I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.
As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.
As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.
I have to take a cross cultural perspectives class and was told it will be offered as a 5 week class starting this winter. You won't truly know what transfers until you get your DARS report. However, an adviser should be able to give you a general idea. Good luck. Oh, and starting next fall there will 9 nursing classes instead of 12. They are combining some course content.
I saw that they said that. I'm curious how they will adjust the credit hours to reflect that. I guess that will also cut some time off, right?
That is good if they are offering a cross cultural class. I could do a 5 week of that, that would be good. So that would pretty much just leave me with the junior writing class, and statistics. Is stats a full semester, or a 5 week as well? Then I could do Algebra and Chem at a local CC here, even though I hate to do both together.
If it's any consolation, I'm also still working on my Module 3 assignment.
The directions for this are not very clear, at least to me, so I'm not really sure about what they're looking for in "Assessment." I wrote only one para for that section and it talks about the need to tailor the teaching plan to the needs of the individuals and the factors that need to be determined to know those needs (age, literacy level, cultural issues, etc). These would be needed to accurately assess the needs of the target audience and I could only think of one way to get them which was via a questionnaire distributed ahead of time.
I usually get the assignments done before the weekend starts and take Sat & Sun morning to revise and edit them before submitting. This time, I'm here writing it for the first time on Sun morning - and I still have to make 2 more DB replies. I'm really not liking this class.
I'm looking for some advice!!!! Doing the health assessments thing......I need to write nursing diagnosis/assessments for my case studies and am having a hard time coming up with some for this particular study. The patient is concerned about his colostomy care and why he doesn't understand the importance of occult blood testing. Anybody know where I can get a list of suggested diagnosis for this type of scenario?? It's not as cut and dry as the previous ones!! Thanks
OK, I just submitted something for Module 3 for NRSE 325. I have no idea if it's what the assignment calls for because the instructions for this module are pretty vague and ambiguous. Kind of maddening but at least I'll know by Weds if I was on the right track or not.
Now on to Mandelian inheritance.
Just wanted to say thank you to you guys for the advice and help. I have decided to go ahead and apply for sure. I did a bit more research on some schools, the clinicals and classes I would need through SUNY if I decided to deal with that whole mess. Sounds like this is the best program for me. So with any luck I can knock out Algebra and Chemistry starting January, and start the OU program in June.
Question though. Some of you guys got bumped to start later than you originally applied for right? Do you think it would be smarter for me to apply to the program starting before the one I initially want? That way if I do get bumped, it's not a huge deal.

Apply now - it make take "a bit" to get through your transcripts and give you a final answer. I was one of the lucky ones - submitted my transcripts and was accepted within about a month. You can always push back your start date after you have been accepted. Good luck to you - hope you enjoy the program!
I hear ya chuckster! I had the same feeling when I hit the submit button. Only 2 modules to go and we can say good-bye to 325. What are you taking next???
Good question.
According to the new listing of class offerings, both Family Nursing (NRSE 330) and Legal & Ethical Reqts in Nursing (NRSE 335) wiill be offered for the Winter 1 session. The same pairing is also scheduled to be offered in the 2012 Summer 2 session. So in theory, I can take either one now and whichever remains in Summer 2. I'm leaning toward 335 for no other reason except that it becomes part of the new course, NRSE 4510 when the transition to semesters starts. So taking it now means that I don't have to worry that I can't get into a section in the Summer, which would then mean I'd have to take 4510. Pretty tortured logic but you asked . . .

yeah - get the upcoming combo classes out of the way or you will end up retaking some classes. I am taking ethics and then gerontology for winter session.

The biggest gripes that I've had are about how long the admission and evaluation process takes - if you look back in in thread, you will see that these are two topics that I and a host of others have commented extensively about here on AN. Though there's much to complain about, I think that overall, the OU program is a good choice. In my case, as well as that for a number of us who applied early in 2011, most of the problem seemed to centered around a new computer system that OU put in place. Hopefully that's resolved but you can't go wrong if you just assume things are going to take much longer than you first thought.
Good luck in the program.
