So I keep seeing all the great things happening in Columbus and it has really got me thinking about moving down there after school. I know Columbus, like Cleveland, has a lot of nursing schools so finding a new grad job wont be easy.
Anywho, does anyone know any real good hospitals to work for down there? I know there is OSU, OhioHealth, and Mt Carmel.
Any input from current or former employees would be great! New grad nurse pay starts from $25-$26/hr here, not sure of shift differentials.
Thanks!
Thanks WoundedBird for the info.
OSU salaries rates for Staff Nurses are based on the union contract, which I was able to find online. I was trying to compare that to the other 2 systems. I'm not a new grad, but new grads at OSU look like they start around $24.50ish. The one thing that turned me off about Mt. Carmel was the 403b-retirement match was froze for 2014 which I understand to mean no matching, is that a sign of money issues?
I have worked for 3 of the 4 major health systems in Columbus and have 4 family members at the 4th. I agree that Columbus is extremely over-saturated. We have 4 BSN programs alone and a lot of ADN programs. I would not recommend even trying to come here without a BSN and 2+ years experience.
OSU can be a little rough to work for because, like mentioned, they are unionized. The union does nothing but harm the working environment of the nurses. It was a large part of why I left bedside nursing at OSU. However, they are a great hospital with the best benefits around. OhioHealth is a great hospital. They treat their nurses well and will back them up at all costs. They have good benefits and good pay. I would highly recommend it. I only worked outpatient at Mount Carmel and patient care was a low priority at this potential office. I ended up working with several physicians to get the office manager fired due to unsafe practice. I am hoping it is better now. They have average benefits at best. They did not match 403b for 2014 but will in 2015 but who knows what'll come after that. Children's is a great place to work if you love kids but it's also your only option if you love kids and they know it. They pay is not the greatest and the benefits are also only average at best.
OSU shift differential is $5/hr between 3pm and 7am. OhioHealth is $4.75 per hour. I am not sure at Mount Carmel but I know it is a little under $5 per hour for evening and a little over $5 per hour for nights.
Thanks for the input! It is a shame to hear about OSU as I would love to work for them, however, I have never worked for a union and it sounds like I would not want to work for the nurse's union at OSU. I guess the best option for me then is to either stay here in Cleveland or to apply to OhioHealth.

I have many friends who work at OSU and their experience with the union is quite opposite yours. They seem quite happy.
Very true about pay and bennies at Children's
Oh don't get me wrong. I loved working at OSU. I wouldn't advise anyone against it. The union is just annoying because it provides no perks compared to other hospitals and it's not cheap. I was never really sure what I was paying for. And the union will not stand behind their nurses like OhioHealth will.
